Wondering on Wednesday

While I have been putting in miles on the treadmill due to the lack of motivation to go outside in the dark day light, I have been wondering.

S'ghetti girl just got her report card.  She did amazing by the way.  But I noticed something as she was digging through your book bag.  Her book bag has gone from looking like this....

...to this!

It is so overstuffed she needs a children's backpack to be able to carry it all without breaking her back.  That got me wondering why text books are still not available on lineWhy do they need to have a children's backpack to carry all their assignments around?
Don't get me wrong, I have even been in the market for a new backpack for our hiking adventures but I don't think my daughter should have to carry a children's backpack to simply manage her daily homework.  And if I got her a children's backpack for school, I doubt she'd be very excited to use it when we were actually hiking.

Have you noticed your child's backpack to have grown since the start of the school year?
Does your school district handle text books and homework differently?

I can help but wonder if there isn't a better way.

Day # 185 ~ a wonderful morning

One thing there is no wondering about, there is no better way to start a day than a foggy morning run!
Happy Wednesday everyone!

  1. YAY for fog! I have fog lights on my car I have never used. sad.

On the bag - Peanut's bag is sooooooooo heavy I swear they [schools] are going to cause a generation of back issues. ;)

  2. I agree that there has to be a better way. Putting all of the info online would be so much cheaper and if need be then distibuting netbooks for the year. We just bought one for $275 and it could be way cheaper especially if done in bulk for kids.
Times are changing faster than many organizations can keep up. Its a bummer too since there are such better ways.

Jaymon and Sam were going over his history book the other day and it was old and even incorrect at some points.
Don't some kids get back problems from carrying too many books...

  3. happy running!! I hate what kids have to lug around now, seriously we did not have 62 huge books to bring home. we had places to leave some at school

  4. there probably is a better way to lug everything around. maybe it's only during the to and from school that she's carrying so much. i know when i was in school there were a few years where you weren't allowed to carry your backpack during school hours. you had to leave everything in your locker / cubby and just take the binder you needed for the time

  5. It starts in Kinder! Crazy all the stuff to sort through...Luckily i have not had to deal with text books yet but Goodness, when all three of my kids are in school at the same time, I'm going to have soooo much to go through and keep track of. Just managing their backpacks will be a full time job. ;) A backpack manager...what a title that will be. Definitely gives me a new perspective as a teacher.

  6. My son's math book, which is ginormous, is actually on line as well. It's a great perk. I would guess most schools will be heading that way at some point, hopefully.

  7. It's horrible that schools don't look at the weight of the bags kids are carrying. They say bags shouldn't be over 10% of a kids body weight. It's sad there is even a statistic on it. I remember all too well what my high school back pack felt like but I don't think I had much homework in my even younger years.

  8. There are lots of reasons why schools and textbook publishers haven't moved texts to an entirely online format (although, 5-10 years from now, I doubt that will still be true). Some of the reasons are financially driven, but some are driven by the simple fact that public schools must provide equitable resources for their students, and not all children have access to the internet at home.

  9. It's nuts how much stuff they make these kids carry around. I don't think I needed a backpack before high school!

  10. I agree with the backpacks! I have a small kid for her age and I hate having to see her carry so much on her back. =(

  11. Yeah sometimes I think my kids need a rolling suitcase instead.

  12. Sure would be great if they were online. My kids almost never bring their text books home - which makes helping with homework quite interesting! Not only that, I've had a teacher misplace one and I got charged for it. Considering I know it never left the school that made me mad. I had to fight it, and eventually the teacher admitted he did receive it but didn't know where it was. Again, online text books would save the problem of unreturned books. Only 3 more years and we're out of the school system. That will be nice.

  13. I had to get my son (6th grade) an internal frame pack (not huge, but still) for his books because it got to the point where it was just unhealthy, he literally could not carry it...sounds the same everywhere....and he even gets to leave some textbooks at home.

  14. Lack O computers in every classroom - that's why we needs textbooks. Plus, not every child has a computer at home to do homework, if the text were online. I'd have S'getti girl wear her book bag across her chest, like a messenger bag, better for the back :).

  15. Get a headlamp and head back outdoors!!!

As for textbooks, almost all are available online these days. School districts don't always give out the codes for them, especially before high school. Talk to the teacher and administrators because there may be a textbook code floating around you can get from them so she can access her books online.

  16. My child is almost 17 and his bag is sometimes so heavy that I can hardly lift it. I blame Chemistry and Physics.

  17. when my daughter was in middle school her back pack was crazy heavy. but she had some classes on mon/wed and others on tue/thu and fridays alternated. so we ended up getting two backpacks so she always had what she needed, but wasn't carrying around too much. it's insane.

  18. At the high school I attended, they went all laptop this year. Each kid gets one for four years and it has all your books on it. Internet is done through the school so they can monitor the students. Teachers can disable internet in their individual rooms to prevent cheating.

The thing is, that kind of edcation is costly- more so than textbooks. The high school I went to is private. My parents sacrificed a lot to send me there 15 years ago and tution has skyrocketed since then.

In the public sector, much to people's disbelief, there is no money in the schools. We struggle for the smallest things for our kids.

We would love to use the internet for all paperwork, but the truth is, not everyone can afford a computer/internet at home...

  19. I actually have seen kids with rolling suitcases as school bags. Crazy!

And I LOVE the treadmill just for the time I get to wonder.
