The Not Really a Race Race Report

As you might recall from yesterday's clifnotes post, our family weekend was a busy one.  It came on the heels of several very full weekends.  Although I knew we had several activities planned with the kids I was actually looking forward to getting to relax, put my feet up and let go of some of the stress of the hectic schedule.
However when the kids and I arrive in VA it wasn't long before Hubbs told me that he had registered us for a 5k, aka the least favorite distance for Shelly to run let alone race ever!
I am no longer 20 something.  It hurts to run fast and not in that "I've been running for 10 hours" good kind of hurt way that I currently love.  Running fast hurts.  Running fast makes me feel like I am going to puke.  And I promised myself a long time ago the puking was something I wasn't going to do anymore*.  But in light of my Hubbs new found desire to run and race a little more I cheerfully agreed that it sounded like a great way to start our Fourth of July day.
while secretly starting to worry about what kind of paces I could hit
The morning of the Fourth I was up early doing all the normal pre-race things.  We were ready to go in plenty of time.  Hubbs even had time and energy to be the one to start the trash texting with his guy friends who would also be running.
We arrived for the Kiwanis Independence Day 5k sponsored by the Charlottesville Track Club and picked up our bibs and T-shirts.  Then joined Hubbs friends for a little pre-race discussion of the other runners race plans.  While we were talking another friend, D shows up.  D is running late and quickly goes to get his bib.  The next time I see him he has a year old-ish baby in a jogging stroller and is standing near the back of the pack.  The group of guys are saying how D is really getting back into shape and is really working hard.  I figure that his wife probably had to work and he figured he would get in a little supported 5k run in with his daughter.
I tell Hubbs I'm going to offer to push the baby so he can race with the guys.  Hubbs thinks that a great idea.  I sprint off to ask D if he'd rather race with his friends.  After several offers D seems very interested in being able to race and I'm rather okay with pushing the jogger since I do it all the time anyway.
But then....
The WIFE
I see a lady walking towards us and she seems concerned as I have my hands on the jogging stroller.
Oh snap!
Seems D's wife isn't working, she is working on learning to run and preparing for a September 4 miler.  This is to be her first race EVER.  Okay I'm cool with running with the jogger but she isn't inclined to allow me to do that without her.  Although D is now eager to get to the front of the pack.
Now I enjoy helping others reach new goals.  I was a trainer for years after all.  So I assure the wife that she can set the pace and I will just stay with her.  Finally she's okay.
RACE VIRGINS
After so many years of running you forget all those little things you learned and race habits you picked up along the way until you race with someone who has never.ever.raced.  When the "gun" went off she didn't move.  When there was a person in front of her she didn't go around.  Once I got her moving and away from the pack, she fell into a steady pace with really good form.  Race virgins don't realize that without a garmin they are very likely to be pulled along with the other runners causing them to run a faster pace.  I did do most of the talking but when I picked up the pace the slightest bit she responded without her form decaying at all.
FIRST MILE
Our first mile was 10:20.  I swear a minute and a half was spent standing behind the start line.  But I digress.  The Wife is breathing hard now but it is very hot and humid.  I ask her how that pace is for a mile.  A PR?  She says it's very fast!  I am praising her up on side and down the other.  She is not as happy.  I ask if she needs a walk break knowing she had said she might not be running the entire race.  She says no.  Her form is great so I do what any supporter would do....
...I start running a stride or two in front of her.  Now remember I'm pushing the baby not her.  She keeps pace with me.  I frequently check in with how she is feeling.
WATER STOP
aka Get the F away from me
That is the most accurate way of describing how the wife was looking at me when we reached the bottom of a hill and the water stop at about 1 3/4miles.  Even though I assured her we could walk she was adamant that I go on without her.  We had seen my husband as we come down the hill to the water stop and she encouraged me to try and catch him on the return trip.  She had had enough cheerleader Shelly.
CATCHING UP
I thought there might be an outside chance I could catch Hubbs.  And we all know I didn't really want him to beat me anyway...stroller or no stroller!  So I was off on a sprint to catch him.  Let me just say, not everyone knows what you mean when you say, Left, Left, On your Left, Passing Left.....10 dozen times.  It was really fun to feel so fast as I passed people but a bit humbling when I saw how many young kids were out running the 5k.  A few of them were not very happy that I was passing them.
Every blue shirt I saw I would sprint to only to see it wasn't him.  I passed D and paused to explain that the wife had nicely asked me to go on without her.  I wasn't happy to see him double back (he was so close to finishing, now I really feel bad!) but he assured me that she had run far more of the race with me than she had planned on running anyway.  What a great husband.  Off I went one more blue shirt.  Could it be?
Unfortunately it wasn't and I ran out of race course.  See why I do longer races?
Hubbs had finished and was walking back from the finish shoot to meet me.  So after a 10:20 first mile and a 10:40 second mile (that's where the wife and I walked at the end) I finished a 5k in 29 minutes, a Personal Worst.
LESSONS LEARNED
Since I didn't race until the last mile or so I can't really count this as a race so I won't beat myself up.  I will have a list of take aways from this experience and will share those in my next post.
I'll leave you with one final thought, some times we grow the most when we've performed at our least.

* yes there is a whole story behind that comment.  I'm sure you can figure it out.  If not and you are interested feel free to email me.  I'd be happy to share my story.

Weekend Wrap Up

Weekend wrap in in photos
because we all know some times I talk way too much!

Our weekend started Friday evening on the road to VA.
The signs were promising for a GREAT weekend.

Bright and early Saturday morning I was wondering how Virginia-ites deal with the heat!

After a Saturday afternoon of shopping and test driving
we headed to C-ville for a long lingering expensive meal at Nook on the mall.

Sunday morning brought Hubbs Father's Day 4 miler.
Given all the trash talking from his friends I am happy to say he beat them both.
not that he was worried he wouldn't

Since the kids were being watched at home we enjoyed
a fat-pill solo breakfast at Panera Bread.

Once home again the kids gave Hubbs all his Father's Day goodies.

And the general goofiness continued throughout the morning.

Back in PA, LBM and I needed to stretch our legs and get our run on.
I think we drug some of the humidity back with us.

How better to end a great Father's Day weekend than in your pajamas?!

The Highlight of my Weekend

Day # 156 ~ a.m. run ~ fog city

This morning while I was running my little wake-up-make-sure-life-doesn't-get-in-the-way run, I could not stop thinking that the highlight of my weekend was the race.

Should I feel quilty that I selfishly feel that way?

Getting to share another race experince with my Hubbs and kiddos was amazing!
Here is our experince in photos:

Waiting near the front of the pack.

Over 160 runners showed up for our little local event.
20th Anniversary of an event will help boost the numbers!
My first mile was 7:20.  I held pretty steady the entire race (7:32 pace).
I held the lead for the first half of the race but simply didn't have the push for the last two hills (go ahead say it, over trained under rested!).  I allowed just a little too much distance to get between me and the other runner.  I gave it everything on the last strech but did not have enough distance to catch her.
46:46 ~ Second
I'll take that on Day # 153

Hubbs took over 2 minutes off his time in two weeks!

I set a 5 year PR for the distance and course!
Once you've been running for decades it's hard to compare your current running with what you were able to do when you were younger...and childless.

Yes. That is LBM laying on the pavillion floor still in his pjs.

Do you see the donut I was eating!  Yummy!
okay half of it went into the trash because that was just tooo much sugar even for me.

There was a giant cake to celebrate the anniversary of the race.  LBM loved it and helped eat 2 pieces!

Our race director is a wonderful woman.  Who works very hard to put on a smoothly ran event.
This races benefits our local Love INC chapter.

LBM helped us both get our medals.
Hubbs was very pleased with how he felt on his run and thanked me for signing us up.
I read that as an invitation to find more race for us to do together, wouldn't you?
S'ghetti girl was busy making friends and begging to hit the play ground.

After awards we played on the play ground with the kiddos.  We just had to reward great racing support.
Thanks to my BIL who watched the kids while we raced!

It was a great morning in a beautiful place doing my very favorite thing with my favorite people!

What did you do with your favorite people over the weekend?

Did you notice...

Did you notice in a recent post HERE there was something different.  Something unusual.

No.  It isn't the I had a double day.
Although I've cut back on them they are still a normal part of my running.

No.  It's not the new shirt.
That's my awesome I-really-didn't-want-to-sweat-in-it Skyline Challenge tech tee.

No.  It's not the fact that I ran 4 miles instead of 3.5.
I know, you just thought I was stuck on that distance in the mornings, huh?

It's the fact that my Hubbs ran with me!
Although he changed his shirt at the last minute, I swear he just wanted to clash! it was his idea to run.
He had a PT test this week and needed to get a run completed to see where his time would be.
How lucky am I?!  It was great to see him out there running without pain and keeping his usual fasty-fast pace I might add.

He did great on his PT test and put some of those younger non-knee surgery men to shame.
Congrats to my Major!

Five for Friday

1.  The trees are filled with blossoms that scent the air near them.
It is heavenly.  I hope the blossoms linger.  I enjoy all the green but the added color is so nice.  I enter a local photography contest each year maybe this year I will get some new macros of the different blossoms to submit and win the category!

2.  Little Bug-man and I went for our evening run tonight.  6.5 miles (52:55)  I had planned to do a split 10 miles tonight since the weather is to get unfavorable but my legs said the first loop was enough and I didn't argue since I already have 40 miles this week.

The Skyline Challenge

Trail 50k Ultra-Marathon

"Your Pain Is Our Pleasure!"

Saturday July 10, 2010

3.  I have finally settled on setting my next "big" race goal.  The Skyline Challenge.  This race is in Virginia, any local-yokels who might be up to experincing it with me, drop me a line.  Or anyone with experince on this course please let me know!
I am excited to have something to look forward to.  Now if hubbs can just work out being able to support me during this race.  His big-boy job has a crazy schedule.

4.  Hubbs finally went back to the doctor because a year after knee surgery he is still having serious pain.  His doctor took an X-ray and did an MRI.  The doctor is fairly certain additional surgery is required to further clean up the medial meniscus that was torn and to remove a screw that is now unnecessary and may be causing some of the discomfort.  I have been praying that hubbs is able to return to running and biking.  Although, hubbs is not a lover of big distance, I have missed sharing training runs with him since his injury.  Hopefully whatever is required will be easily recoved from and end his pain.

5.  I have a 5k on tap April 24th for my April race.  Since this goal is very "if-y" due to various life issue right now, I haven't offically mentioned it here but I am hopeful to run a race (of any distance) at least once a month this year.  So I was very excited when I found out that Woodman of the World is hosting a Relay for Life running event locally!  Score!
A race for April, maybe a 5k PR and a good cause.
That's my 5 for Friday.  What's yours?

3 Changes Challenge

April 15th - Thursday

1. h2o/non-caffeinated - 70oz - Success

2. Destress - Post run I spent some time while the kiddos played in the bubble tub doing yoga and I prayed this morning before getting out of bed and will spend time in prayer again tonight before I drift off to sleep, which will be soon!! - Success

3. Xtrain - I did walking lunges and squats after my run while walking to see the baby goats with little bug-man, s'getti, my niece and nephew. Still not what I want out of this goal so I will HAVE to get it in this weekend to make my 2 days goal! - needs improvement
