I told I would share this recipe.
It is sooo good.

CRUST:

1 Box of yellow cake mix (Reserve 1 cup and set aside)
Add to the cake mix 1 melted stick of butter or margarine, 1 beaten egg, and ½ cup of chopped walnuts. Mix well. Spread mixture in a 9x13 greased baking pan.

FILLING:

Mix together: 1 large can of pumpkin, 4 beaten eggs, ½ cup of brown sugar, ½ cup sugar, 2/3 cup of Evaporated milk, 2 ½ tsp of cinnamon, 1 tsp of nutmeg, ¼ tsp salt. Spread the filling over the crust.

TOPPING:

Mix together until crumbly: the reserved 1 cup of cake mix, ½ cup sugar, ½ cup of walnuts, ½ stick of softened butter or margarine. Crumble the topping over the filling.

Bake @ 350 for 50-60 minutes. Cool and serve with whipped cream on top.

(I have had better luck reducing the temp to 325 to avoid over browning the bottom)

L. O. & Ts

Run # 89 - (3.5/ 29:22)
Don't worry I'll do the laundry soon!

What running The Skyline Challenge showed me:

Lessons

I learned that I must follow the trail myself.
I learned that there is always a price to pay for using anything "new" on race day!
I learned I have to drink, fuel, medicate before I think I do.
I learned that I can ignore a lot of discomfort when distracted by enough trees.
I learned that my mind is 1000% stronger than my body will ever be.
I learned that on any given day I can amaze myself.

Observations

I noticed that I can pee anywhere after running through the woods long enough.
I noticed that people will DFN for lots of reasons - kittens being one of them
CLICK HERE to read the story.
I noticed the same view can be just as breathtaking the second time around.
I noticed that people show their inner-selves after about 10 miles on the trails.
I noticed that body type has nothing to do with how well you race an Ultra!
I noticed there is an unpleasant satisfaction when a blister breaks 18 miles into the race.
I noticed that 6k of elevation gain and loss is not more than I can handle.

Thoughts

I wonder if people would all get along better if they had to help eachother
overcome a challenge once in a while?
I wonder if those salamanders stayed off the road?
I wonder if I will ever be able to share that level of joy with my family?
I wonder if my family knows how much it meant to me to have them there cheering for me?
I wonder how long I will be able to wait before asking to do another trail ultra?

I have ONE regret

After having already run 40.8 miles this week, S'ghetti girl, LBM and I headed south right after work on Friday.  The kids were excited for all the activites Hubbs had planned to entertain them while I was running, staying at a nice hotel with a pool didn't hurt either.
The drive went smoothly except for the hammering downpours as we drove through thunderstorms.  I was glad to see the rain hopeful that it would lower the temperatures for the race tomorrow morning.

We arrive at our hotel around 7:30 p.m.  The hotel is bustling.  There was an Extreme Adventure Moto event taking place at the same area (The Cove Campground) that the race was to be held.  At first this was interesting.  I got to talk with one of the organizers of the event and several of the drivers as we patiently waiting to get our luggage and the two million "I can't go a night without it" child items up to our room without the benefit of a cart as they were all being used by the Extreme Adventure folks ~ mostly as a place to rest while they chatted and drank beer.

However being super girl for the weekend I easily managed the two kids and all the luggage and toys/blankets/snacks/race gear without interrupting their beer consumption.  Once settled in we had only to wait for Hubbs would had been delayed with a work issue and would not arrive until 9.  I had already been eating carb heavier meals but once Hubbs arrived we all went out for a rather late meal and to burn off some of the kids energy.

The plan had been for Hubbs to try to get LBM to sleep with him so that I could sleep what few hours we would have between lights out and the alarm.  Things rarely go as planned.  LBM would have nothing to do with Dad and of course wanted to make up for the lost hours of my run by sleeping latched on to me.  Literally!

That was fine.  Sleep.  What was that?
I look at the clock and it was 2:23 a.m.  and I am hearing a air wrench.  I.am.not.kidding.
The wonderful Exterme Adventure folks were outside our side of the building changing tires on the rigged out jeeps.  Yep.  Then Hubbs wakes up and asks if I am hot.  Well, yes it was hot in the room.  Our ac was broken.  I didn't sleep after that point.  I just snuggled with LBM and waited to see 4:00.

I was suprised by how dark it was at 4 a.m.  That is when I realized that I didn't have my contacts and would be running with my glasses on.  Not a great idea when the risk of falling is so high.
I also noticed that it was still rain.hard.  At least it would be cool.
It was so dark out!  My crappy Palm would not flash!
Hubbs and I at the start

I get up and go through the routine of getting ready to run.  I don't have to worry about nursing LBM since he spent the night with me.  That saved me some time still we are out the door a little later than we wanted.  So I was rushing at the start and had to jog to the potties no, outhouse when they were giving last instructions.

If you can see, I am smiling...that's before the fun started.

We tried a few pictures but they all were dark.  More to come from Hubbs when I get them.
I got my bib #12, ran to the outhouse, dropped a bag for the end of the race, hugged and kiss my family and then waited in the rain.

Thinking, "What that *#@! am I doing out here?"

With only 126 other crazies running it was an informal start with a "go."  After only 5 minutes the lead fasties informed us that they had lead us up the wrong hill.  Thanks.  It would take two more side tracks before I would learn the lesson here.
The first 8 miles were up hill.  Not just up a hill but up a 10 - 12% grade hill covered with mud, loose rock and leaves surrounded by a forest filled with posion ivy.  It was great!
During this section we were to follow ribbons tied on trees since we were not on an offical trail,  I fell into "running" with a group of about 20 other people with one young man speeding past us and saying something about getting to the start late.  After about 10 minutes I notice that our little group is bunching up.  There is a problem up ahead (of course this couldn't have happened at the bottom of the current hill we were going up!).  The fasty fast runner had doubled back because he had not seen a ribbon for a while.  We had gone the wrong way for about 3/4 of a mile!  We doubled back to find where we had lost the course.  We all joke about the extra distance and how we didn't need that.  I continue to run with this group through the first aid station which was a blur in my mind.  I had taken my new CamelBak which was mostly a blessing.

Those first 8+ miles took me just under 2 hours including one aid station.  When I got to the second aid station which was set on an half mile out and back under electrical lines the steepest of which I couldn't see due to the dense fog in the morning, I thought that it had just taken me nearly twice as long to go that distance as it does when I am on the road.  My legs were already covered in mud and scratches and I had nearly a marathon to go.

Between aid station #2 (which would also be #6 on the return trip) and number #3 there were stretches of wonderful single track trail (seriously we're talking deer trails here) separated by switch backs and trails covered with, you guess it rocks.  Unrunnable rocks, break your ankle and fall down the side of the mountain rocks.  So my pace was terrible but I tried to avoid all out walking everywhere I could.

At aid station # 3 (which would also be # 5) I actually copped a squat.  This was the second time I showed all of nature my behind.  The joys of ultra trail running.  I took a banana half at this aid station and a couple pretzels plus a cup of soda (at aid stations I tried to avoid the junk carbs and stick with the better fueling options.  Although while running ultras I treat myself to a soda with calories).  I was taking Gu along the way that I was carrying plus one from an earlier aid station.  I felt much better fueled for this race!  I was carrying Heed in my pack and I drank often.

Next was an out and back to aid station # 4 on a wide trail.  This was the first opportunity to see the fasties headed back on the return trip.  I took noticed of the first few guys but mostly was interested in what the girls were doing who were in the lead.  I did see one guy wearing Vibrams.  He looked super strong.  The lead ladies looked better than I thought I did.  I encouraged everyone who passed by me and mostly they did the same.  I did notice one girl running with a man.  I don't know why I remembered her so well, maybe the pink trimmed Nike Dryfit shorts?  She was one of the first 5 females at that point and going strong.  I would see her again and think she was a little like that show about Beauty.  The one where you are really judged on your beauty INSIDE.  I'll explain.

But back to the trail section:  This would be where I flew!  I chicked off so many runners in this section and made up some serious time.  I began to think I could actually get close to PRing.  But I didn't want my excitement to make me go too fast when I never I was having more trouble with the down hills than the up hills.    So I told myself I wouldn't walk until I got back through the aid station and returned to the woods after aid station # 5.  And that's what I did.mostly.

Because this is where I started talking to another female runner who I made been trying to catch.  We were too busy talking to look for ribbons we followed another runner who was headed up yet another hill.  Wrong way.  That is where I learned that I have to watch the trail for myself.all.the.time!  Thankfully someone at the bottom of the hill yelled to us that we had gone the wrong way.  We went to the top of the hill trying to catch the other runner but he was long gone.  (I hope he got back on track!)

Once around the aid station -  which of course was up a long winding hill - I really tried to pick the pace up.  These down hills were mostly runnable.  I quickly found myself running alone again.  I kept telling myself that I could (would have to) slow down once I hit the switch backs in the woods but I would not walk any of this 11+ mile section.  I did stop to pick up 3 salamanders and put them on the side of the road.  I passed some runners who had been running with me earlier.  They sounded German.  She called me pig-tail girl and yelled some encouragement.  As I was getting close to the aid station I saw miss pink-trimmed Nike Dryfit shorts.  I wondered how she would have made such little progress since I last passed her.  (she had been headed back and I was headed in to the turn around when I first saw her).  Since I was really running at that point we exchanged only well wishes and I raced on but as I was leaving the aid station (another banana half, water, pretzels and a few gummie bears) I over heard her talking as she appoarched the volunteers.  She was complaining about going off course and costing herself time and distance.  She was probably not at her best due to fatigue however, it was her behavior that helped remind me that I DID NOT want to behave that way no matter how tired I got.  So I continued to be smiling and up beat whenever I caught up with other runners.  Quite a few commented about how/why I was so happy/positive that late in the race.  It made me stop worrying about beating the 7 hour mark.  I felt so good about HOW I was racing that day.

I made my way back to the switch backs, I passed several groups of guys who were walking.  They did not appreciate my words of encouragement.  Grouchy!  I simply continued on my way.  As I neared the middle of the switch back section I came across Mr. Vibrams.  He was sitting along the trail rubbing his leg.  (This was the third time I stopped to offer help to another runner)  I chatted with him and asked 3 times if I should send help.  I know that sometimes pride makes us not want to accept help when we should.  He assured me that with 8ish miles to go he was going to finish.  (And he did.  I saw him come in as we were leaving the campgrounds.  We put the car windows done and cheered.)  The 4 man grouchy group passed me as I talked with Mr. Vibrams I would not see them again until the final aid station and their plan to walk had paid off for them because the were making great time in the last sections.

The final aid station was a repeater too.  However, this is where I realized I had one regret.  No one would ever believe that a race director would ever have people running up and down the section between the trail and the aid station.  I wish I had carried my camera but the worry over a few more ounces kept me from doing it.  I couldn't see it due to the fog and rain that morning but it was completely clear by noon.  It was steep and rocky and breathtaking.
I got confirmation of 4 miles to go once I reached that aid station.  I was literally jumping up and down and ready to hug every volunteer there.  I could not get the smile off my face.  Other runners who were headed out to the aid station as I was headed back kept telling me it was there.
That smile.  I was having the time of my life!

Those last four miles I was completely alone.  I worried that I would go off trail.  Everything looked so different once the rain had stopped and the hills were no longer rocky mud filled rivers.  But I didn't.  I did think of all of you in those last miles (as I had thought of some of you all throughout my race).  I thought how Steph was still running with more miles to go and wishing that I had more because I was having so much fun.  I thought how encouraged I have felt from all of you who take the time to comment or email.  I thought about how I would love to share the excitement and joy I feel for trail running with Hubbs or the kids someday.  Mostly I just thanked God for seeing me through this without serious injury and wishing I could give that kind of joy to everyone I know.

The miles flew by and I could hear people and cheers.  I knew I was getting close.  I finally climbed down out of the mountain and was on the ground running with every thing I had yet.  Hoping my family would be there to run in with me.  I glanced at the watch.  I couldn't believe how close I had come to be under 7 hours!  I had told my Hubbs I honestly thought I need 8 to finish.
Some days you just amaze yourself.  This day was one of those days for me.
I sprinted to the finish.  There was my family, cheering me in.

There's No Taper on a Streak

Run # 83 - I cut this to 3.5 (29:29) to save my legs a bit

I am so close to my 100 Runs.
I wasn't sure I would get this far but now that I have I simply MUST get to 100.  Okay, I couch that comment since I still have yet to survive the Ultra and be able to walk the next day let alone run
But I do intend on attempting to continue after the Ultra if at all possible so there is no taper while streaking.

Run # 84 - I look a bit sickly in this early morning light

This morning I ran a nice easy wake up 3.5 miles (28:39) and that is the last run until Saturday morning when I run into the woods tomorrow morning at 6.  That will make the Ultra my 85th run.
How cool if I had made it my 100th run?  But at least I will still have something to get out there and work towards after the race.  I won't be able to fall into those after race blues.

I may not make it around to wish everyone speedy legs for all those racing and training over the weekend so Run Strong and enjoy!

Tonia at Racing with Babes is hosting a Zensah compression sock giveaway.  The folks at Zensah must have stalked Tonia to know that she would lovelovelove their argyle print compression knee socks!  What?  You didn't know that about Tonia?!  You have to go catch up with this amazing mom of three.  She is a new running coach, child-herder, home manager and supportive wife who happens to love to look goood when she runs and she runs A LOT!  She is training for her upcoming races;  two halfs, a tri and her marathon in October!  She really is a running mom you should know.  Go over and say Hi and remember to tell Tonia that I sent you.

A Morning Run

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful comments on my last post.  It helps to know that others have dealt with support/family issues and found ways to make it all balance.

This morning I was out for a short run (3.5 / 27:42).  It would be nice to say I got out before the heat but it seems to not cool down anymore.  I did enjoy getting out in the morning to start the day.
I didn't like the thought that 6 a.m. seemed early to me, knowing that Saturday will be much much earlier!

Is it odd that my biggest worry for the race on Saturday is the start time?
Not the hills.  Not the heat.  Not the distance.
Just the super early morning.

A little resistance and a running confession

Run # 80 - HOTHOTHOTHOT

It is the hot topic:  the heat!
I think back about 60ish days ago when this streak started and I remember longing for warm days and the suns rays.  Now I choose the side of the road to run on based on the amount of shade.  Now it's hot no matter how early I get up.

I can't say it is all bad.  I have been getting much better about always carrying water.  In fact while we were in VA I used my big Nathan's handheld for the first time and was so glad I had it!  Another upside is that after a great sweaty run the kids and I go jump in the pool.

Last night we did just that.  It was so great to see the sun go down while we were splashing.  S'ghetti girl and I got to swim 'alone' for a while since LBM had fallen asleep in the stroller during the run and was still napping there when we first jumped in the pool.  It was nice to have a little time with just us girls.  But LBM didn't nap long and the rowdiness started back up again.

With much resistance the kids finally went inside for baths afterwhich we called Hubbs for our evening chat.  S'gehtti girl had promised her dad that she would call every night and talk so she started the conversation and then passed the phone to me.

To say that Hubbs is happy about this up coming race would be a stretch and having my family there has been in question.  However, I told Hubbs I would simply not run the race if he felt it was too much of an issue for the family.  He had talked with S'ghetti girl to get her opinion.  This is what she said:

Hubbs:  Do you want to go to mommy race this Saturday?
S'ghetti:  Yes!
Hubbs:  Now we will have to get up at 4:45 to see mommy off at the start.
S'ghetti:  What?  Why so early?
Hubbs:  Well, that's when it starts.  It's a really long race.  We could let mommy go alone and just see her after or not go at all but mommy probably won't run if we are not there.
S'ghetti:  Then I want to go.  I'll take a nap later, okay?  I want to see mommy running.  I know it makes her so happy!

I think after this race I will be taking a racing break for a while.  I wanted to race once a month this year but I think my running goals have advanced enough that the things I want to attempt are starting to be too much for my family right now.  So I'll keep training as if I might do that 50 miler this October but I'll focus on local running and local shorter races (if any for a while) and I'll be okay if I just run our local marathon (and maybe a few closer to the VA house) this fall and spend a bit more time focusing on the family who loves me enough to get up at these crazy hours to see me run away from them and then comes back to see me run back to them X hours later.

My confession:
I have taken their support a bit for granted.
They deserve a little more of my time.
It's hard to admit that but I know it's true.

What's your running confession?  Have you ever dealt with a little family resistance?

It's not the Fourth without fireworks

This morning it was back to the ole' routine.
Not easy to do after a long weekend and hours in the car with 2 kiddos.
But thinking back to our adventure filled weekend helped get me going and will carry me throughout the day.

LBM enjoying his new swing

S'ghetti girl cooling off

Finding a little relief from the heat

Almost brave enough

It's not the Fourth without fireworks

You can't quite call it the Fourth without fireworks and our family sure had more than it's share over the extended weekend.
As hard as it is to head back to work it's nice too.  It's nice to have that familar schedule and routine.
Plus remember it's already Tuesday!  The weekend will be back again before you know it.

How do you get over that "back to work" dead-ness after a long weekend?

Do I have strong enough teeth?

Run# 75 (6.5 / 55:xx)  My legs were tired!  Recovery socks here I come.

LBM and I got out for a regular loop last night.  That's run # 75 if you are keeping track.  After the speedier runs #73 and #74, my legs were done!  I was on track to a typical pace at my first two check points however I slowed after the halfway mark which is after two big hills.  That causes me some worry considering my race is nothing but hills...on trails no less.

Goals for Skyline.

My I FINISHED goal:  I want to finish.  Well first off I want to start.
There is always the issue of getting there on time with a 6 a.m start and the requirement that I am onsite by 5:15.  If it were just me, no problem but with kiddos and one still nursing that could be an issue.

My I CAN goal:  Complete the course under the time limit of 12 hours.
I feel even with tired legs I will be able to finish the course even if I have to walk to recover in really steep sections.
My I LOVE IT goal:  Finish within 31 minutes of my last 50k
I say 31 minutes because that would give me an extra minute per mile.  Knowing this course is far more difficult than the last 50k and I have not been training with a PR in mind...well it was in mind but not reflected in how I worked and rested (or lack there of) my body!
MY DREAM IT goal:  A new 50k PR
I'd love to say that I will better my previous 50k however, I've already been told by those more experinced than myself that will NOT happen.  I believe it is always best to go into things with an open educated mind so I will not put the pressure of a "time" on this race but instead focus on being more aware of my pace throughout the race to avoid hitting a wall and entering the dreaded DNF zone!

With 8 more days until Race day, I am certain that my goals for the race WILL be effected by my self-imposed 100 run streaking. Do I regret it? No. Maybe 20+ miles into the Ultra I will change that answer but for now I know myself and I realize that I am part bull dog. Once a challenge has entered my mind, I nearly have to die to not attempt to finish it.

Maybe that bulldoggedness will help me over come The Skyline Challenge.

So wish me strong legs and teeth next Saturday bright and early.

Are a bulldog's teeth big enough to bite into this?

....doppler radar has issued a Running Warning for the following areas....

Welcome to the new faithful followers!  I look forward to getting around to meet you.  Please feel free to become a constant commenter so we can get to know eachother.  I can use all the advice and encouragement I can get.

Yeah the return of Biking Sherpa!  I missed her
Run # 72 (6.5/52:27)

Last night I sent of a Running Warning forecast.  Doppler radar had pick up the presence of an increase in motivational pressure quickly moving into my area.  The forecast was for a fast moving storm containing moderate amounts of moisture and steady wind to overtake the area around 6 p.m. and move out of the area by 7 p.m.  Luckily Biking sherpa got the update and responded.

Biking Sherpa getting artsy with the camera
...or maybe she passed out from the run...I better check.

We had a great run.  We did a usual route in reverse, Biking Sherpa's favorite way.  I felt slow and heavy at first but loosened up as we got past some of the lengthy inclines.  I wanted to extend the run a bit but Biking Sherpa wasn't up for anything extarordinary so we finished up and chatted for a while.  But as you can see, Biking Sherpa clearly had a little extra energy for being silly after the run!
Maybe tonight she'll be energized to go again?!

Post run silliness

This morning I was tired.  LBM is staying up way too late at night and getting up early.  So this morning off we went for a wake up run.  3.5 miles 27:07  It was actually chilly.  I am not complaining, of course.  I am simply noting the conditions for comparison sake.  I was a bit speedier this morning dispite having run last night and the fact that it was run # 74.  The cooler conditions may have helped me quicken the pace.

Run # 73 (3.5/27:07)

Pig tails rock!

Welcome journey joiners!  You now number 100.
I will make it around to say hello but in the meantime, let me know what you think.
Leave a comment or drop me a email.
Thanks to all those followers who do let me know what is on their minds.
I love hearing your feedback, suggestions and comments.

Day One of what I hope to be three consecutive 10 mile days.  I am hoping because tomorrow is Hubbs knee surgery so depending on how he is managing post-surgery I may not be able to get all my miles in.
I have less than 2 month before my next ultra, The Skyline Challenge, so I need to keep my miles heavy and train my legs to go when they are tired.  I have been doing my version of some speed work.  Using my unstrollered morning 3.5 miles to hit a faster than race pace.  Since my ultra will be on trails speed won't be as big a factor as endurance.  So my training will focus on high mileage and pushing my lactic threshold.

Tonight we did our 6.5 mile loop (51:45) finishing our 10 miles for the day.  It was an overcast foggy day.  The run was enjoyable even though LBM wanted every single flower we passed.  When I picked one and gave it to him, he was mad that the flower was wet and he couldn't blow all the seeds off of it.
He eventually tired of the wet flowers and curled up with blankey and napped the remainder of the run.

With the humidity so high, I was the usual sweaty mess by the time I was done.  I am loving the shorter hair.  Piggy tails are awesome!  And Hubbs feel like he has a brand new wife, but that's a topic for a different kind of post.

What does your spouse/significate other think when you make a big change to your appearance?

Stacie is hosting an amazing giveaway!  You have to check it out.  If you have kiddos who you want to look even more adorable than how cute they already are, you should check this one out!!  Tell Stacie I sent you over!

Five for Friday

1.  The trees are filled with blossoms that scent the air near them.
It is heavenly.  I hope the blossoms linger.  I enjoy all the green but the added color is so nice.  I enter a local photography contest each year maybe this year I will get some new macros of the different blossoms to submit and win the category!

2.  Little Bug-man and I went for our evening run tonight.  6.5 miles (52:55)  I had planned to do a split 10 miles tonight since the weather is to get unfavorable but my legs said the first loop was enough and I didn't argue since I already have 40 miles this week.

The Skyline Challenge

Trail 50k Ultra-Marathon

"Your Pain Is Our Pleasure!"

3.  I have finally settled on setting my next "big" race goal.  The Skyline Challenge.  This race is in Virginia, any local-yokels who might be up to experincing it with me, drop me a line.  Or anyone with experince on this course please let me know!
I am excited to have something to look forward to.  Now if hubbs can just work out being able to support me during this race.  His big-boy job has a crazy schedule.

4.  Hubbs finally went back to the doctor because a year after knee surgery he is still having serious pain.  His doctor took an X-ray and did an MRI.  The doctor is fairly certain additional surgery is required to further clean up the medial meniscus that was torn and to remove a screw that is now unnecessary and may be causing some of the discomfort.  I have been praying that hubbs is able to return to running and biking.  Although, hubbs is not a lover of big distance, I have missed sharing training runs with him since his injury.  Hopefully whatever is required will be easily recoved from and end his pain.

5.  I have a 5k on tap April 24th for my April race.  Since this goal is very "if-y" due to various life issue right now, I haven't offically mentioned it here but I am hopeful to run a race (of any distance) at least once a month this year.  So I was very excited when I found out that Woodman of the World is hosting a Relay for Life running event locally!  Score!
A race for April, maybe a 5k PR and a good cause.
That's my 5 for Friday.  What's yours?
