So Her Name is Sandy

I live in a bubble.

A cartoon filled, crayon colored bubble.

Inside my bubble issues like elections, taxes and weather have been replaced with finding stuffed animals, negotiating nap times and making sibling peace treaties.

So I was a bit under concerned when I first notice on FB that the word of the day was WEATHER.  And her name is Sandy.

Still with only 2 more sleep until Fire on the Mountain.  I doubt I will worry too much.  There will be 31+ miles to run whether that be on dry bright trails frolicking in the sunlight or on muddy slick trails soaking up the rain.  Either way I am beyond eager to get out there and see what the day has to offer.

What's that?  Oh you wanna know about goals?  Lets see:

My I FINISHED goal:
To arrive on time. To start. To finish.

aka: Finish Feeling Fine having Fun

My I CAN goal:
Finish
(in under 7:00 )
I say this because barring an injury or major GI issues this course should allow even my tired legs to do that. Even with the questionable weather.  Should being the most important word to notice in that sentence.

My I LOVE IT goal:
To finish within 31 minutes of my course PR.
With a current FOTM PR of 6:32: my I LOVE IT time would be 6:01.

My I DREAM IT goal:
Under 5:59:33 hours. aka a new 50k PR

Honestly I'd love to simply run this course strong.  That would feel like a success especially if the weather is less than great for technical trail running.  This is a tough course at least for me.  I know it fairly well.  I know where the challenges are and sometimes that isn't something that helps me run better.  This will be a race to trust in my conditioning.  A race to see where I am in going into Stone Mill 50 miler.  A race to prove that I can go beyond what I can see.

Bull Run Run 2012 ~ Race Goals

As I began to think about what kind of goals I wanted to have in mind for my second visit to the Bull Run Run 50 miler, I went back and reread my 2011 Bull Run Run Report.  That had been my first 50 miler.  In ways, I feel as though I have learned so much since then and in other ways I feel like I am still making some of the same mistakes.

Those mistakes are in large part due to my conflicting desires.  I want to run every.single.day and I want to run uber long distances and I want to still be running 5, 10, 50 years from now.  Being aware of these life goals isn't enough to make them a healthy reality.  These life goals are a lot like running an ultra.

When running an ultra it can be the little things you do in those early miles that either set your run up to be an amazing journey or destine your run to be a brutal challenge.  In my life, healthy habits early on have helped me get to a fitness level that I can fairly comfortably go out and run 50ks without any "real" training.  I have slowly built my mileage and frequency over the past 20 years and that habit has set the stage for the goals I now have.  But just as going out too fast in an ultra can cripple you in those final 10 miles, continuing to run long distances every single day/week will surely begin to take a toll on my distance and long term goals.

So with a much reduced week
and several single digit days I know that I have put myself into a better position to set some realistic goals for the
2012 Bull Run Run 50 miler
and here they are:

My I FINISHED goal:
To arrive on time. To start. To finish.
aka: Finish Feeling Fine having Fun
My I CAN goal:
Finish in under 13:00
Yeah, that's the course limit
My I LOVE IT goal:
To beat my PR.
With a current PR of 11:09 my I LOVE IT time would be 11:08 or better
My I DREAM IT goal:
Under 11 hours but because I'm dreaming anyway,
I'd really being dreaming if I can run smart and strong and go sub 10:30
A girl can dream.

With these goals in mind, I will be running a steady and smart 30+ miles.  My body will be setting the pace.  I will simply be enjoying the ride.  Once I get through the Do Loop I will be reevaluating.  If there is any race to run this Saturday it will happen in the last 20 miles.  I'll get to wait and see.  What I do know is that on any given day I just don't know what I am capable of until I amaze myself doing it.

To all my friends racing this weekend and to the many running Boston, Run Strong and Smart!

2012 HAT Run 50k Goals

My 2011 running of The HAT Run was such a positive experience I am not only eager to have another 50k to run but this one in particular is one I have looked forward to.  This race is to be a training run a fact best illustrated by the 50 miles I have already run since Monday however the trail conditions are to be amazing and I can't help but think that if I am having a perfect running day that I might just better my course time.  Well, it could happen.

As always the biggest goal is to run in such a way that I am able to run every day it is mostly with that goal in mind that I set and publicly announce my 2012 HAT Run goals.

My I FINISHED goal:
To arrive on time. To start. To finish.
aka: Finish Feeling Fine having Fun
Okay I have been here before so even though I am geographically challenged (I am. I have a card. It's a club.) my car's GPS is not but the super secret spy is coming too so who knows what might happen.
Another speeding ticket? Maybe.

My I CAN goal:
Finish in under 7:00
I say this because barring an injury or major GI issues this course should allow even my tired legs to do that.  Should being the most important word to notice in that sentence.

My I LOVE IT goal:
To finish within 31 minutes of my PR.
With a current PR of 5:59:33 my I LOVE IT time would be 6:30.

My I DREAM IT goal:
Under 6 hours. aka a new 50k PR

We had a loss locally of a wonderful man only 40 years old.  He was a husband and father of three girls.  He was active and involved in kids sports and the community.  He passing was sudden and unexpected.  In light of this reminder I will take all the positive experience I can from this race and it's runners and volunteers no matter how my body chooses to perform on Saturday.  I will not forget to share those tree sheltered miles with prayers for those who can not be out there with me.  I ask as you run or play or love your family this weekend, you purposefully pause for a moment to acknowledge the gift, the blessing, of being able to do it.

Saturday I will run because I can and remember those who can't.
I know that on any given day I just don't know what I am capable of until I amaze myself doing it.

Five 4 Friday

Being a numbers girl I was excited after my run last night when I realized that I had run 2936.1 miles in 2011.  That means that if I can average 7.1 miles a day for the rest of the year I could hit 3000.  That could be a lifetime record!  The stumbling block could be the holidays but at least it gives me one final goal to push for.

Do you have a final year end goals?  Did you meet all your 2011 goals?  What was the one you are most proud of?

Well it seems as though my readers don't like the idea that the word failure can be a positive thing if the response to yesterday's post is any indication.  If you missed it click HERE

What do you think being a "failure" means?

Today is my wedding anniversary.  I'm not a big romantic.  With kids under foot it is easy to slip into mom and dad roles and neglect the husband/wife roles a bit especially when the super secret spy and I are apart most weeks.  BUT tonight we will be spending an evening without children.  I know there will be eating and adult conversation.  I think there may be more but it's been a while since I was on a date so I might need to glance over the handbook to prepare myself.

Do you and your sweetheart make time for just each other?  Even after years of marriage?

I think December forgot it was December because we have been enjoying so fantastic weather!  Look at the morning I enjoyed recently.  Getting to run without looking like the Michelin man this time of year is great but I am kinda wishing for a white Christmas.  Sorry I am a four seasons kind of person.

Do you wish for a white Christmas?

Speaking of Christmas and the holidays no matter what you celebrate or if this time of year is simply the ending of one year and the beginning of the next, I wish you and yours a safe and happy season.

Merry Christmas everyone!

3TT ~ Other's Goals, Real Goals, Dreamland Goals

Others
Alyssa at chocolate is my life is also running Stone Mill on Saturday.  She posted about her "non-goals" for her first 50 Miler.  I think enjoying the experience is a great way to head into the challenging task of running 50 miles.  Hop over and wish  her...not good luck because luck has nothing to do with it...but maybe a strong mind and unfailing legs!
Another friend, Kara at It's a dog lick baby world has spent the summer and fall preparing for her first 50 mile adventure.  If you haven't been lucky enough to already follow her please click over there and send her some well wishes as she takes on the mighty JFK 50 Miler this Saturday!
She posted some to me aggressive goals.  Goals I feel certain her training and the course will carry her to hit.  I have been giving my Stone Mill goals A LOT of thought.  Although I hadn't planned on setting any public goals with all the question marks surrounding this race day, I decided that nothing ventured is nothing gain.

So here for better or worse are my Stone Mill 50 Miler
REAL Goals:
My I FINISHED goal:
To arrive on time. To start.
To finish.  To finish feeling fine.  To finish feeling fine having fun!

My I CAN goal:
The race has a 12 hour cut off.  I feel baring any issues that would
result in my legs being removed from my body
force me to DNF
I can finish this course within that time frame.
My I LOVE IT goal:
A new distance PR. I have run some of these trails during the Seneca Greenway 50k this spring.  I set my 50k trail PR on that section of trail.  Setting a new PR shouldn't be completely outside the realm of possibility.  Anything under 11:08:59 would do it.

DREAMLAND
My I DREAM IT goal:
10 hours and anything
Seriously with my lack of 50k+/- length training runs, the healing tailbone, the cold that won't quit and now sick kids too, if the course and day give me 10:59:59 I would be giddy with happiness.

Fire on the Mountain Trail 50k ~ Goals

Hoping the water on the FOTM course is not quite this high!

With the Tough Mudder Virginia still ever present in my mind and on my backside it's been a challenge to get my mind around the fact that my 32 mile "training run" this Sunday is the Fire on the Mountain Trail 50k
You can read about last year's race HERE
But I know that even though this is a run to prepare me for the Stone Mill 50 Miler on November 19th, it is still a race that I would love to improve my performance at so keeping both those things in mind I give you my FOTM Goals for 2011.

 My I FINISHED goal:
To arrive on time. To start. To finish.

The race has a 9 hour cut off.  I was fortunate enough to get to do two 16 mile runs on the course.  Unfortunately I did the same 16 mile leg twice, the end.  Leaving the most technical and dangerous section "unpracticed" since last year.  I hope to run a smart race in that I want to run the last 16 faster than I run the first 16 given my practice that could happen.
My I CAN goal:
Finish within 32 minutes of previous course time.  Last year I ran this race in 6:32 minutes.
I won the female master's division.

I say 32 minutes because that is the distance of this course in minutes. I figure I can finish within 32 minutes either side of my previous time. Barring not falling on my very painful tail bone or having it cause me problems during the run.

My I LOVE IT goal:
A new distance PR.

Since trail ultras are not exact distances. RDs like to say their course is at least 50k, a new PR would be more about average pace than finishing time but with a 50k PR (time) of 6:06 I'd love to crush that on Sunday.  And retaining my master's title would ice the cake.
My I DREAM IT goal: Under 6 hours.
I know anything is possible.  Even with 539 days of running.  Even with a broken tail bone.  Even if this isn't the A race.  Even if I don't have the best day of running.  I still could achieve this goal.  I still could amaze myself at what God can do with the body and mind He has given me.  I pray Sunday is one of those days when I am yet again the vessel through which He does something amazing!

The only other I could pray for is to have that thought that has been with me so much lately stay with me as I run across that finish line and throw my log onto the bonfire!

I pray this year that I see those flames and think;
What else does He have in store for me?

Need a prayer for your weekend race or long run?  Maybe you just need a little prayer lift?
I'll be praying through my run and would love to add you to my prayer band.
Just let me know!

The sound of the rain...

I had two dreams
in both, I was running.

In one dream I was running for a very long time on beautiful single track trails.  The extra 15 pounds I have been working on losing wasn't holding me back, I felt fast and light with each step.  Although it was dark when I started running the sun was rising.  It was amazing.

And in the next moment I was running urban trails in the heat of the day.  I could hear traffic and people.  We crossed under an overpass and slipped onto a small trail that led us across a river filled with large stones.

I could hear the sound of water and then familiar voices...

I slowly woke to realized that I wasn't running my 77 mile ultra that was to be the next step to my 100 mile goal.  I wasn't even running the Xterra 21k  in Richmond a race that I had a free entry to run.  But in fact, I had fallen asleep sitting on the deck in the morning light after my run in sweat-ville Virginia.  It was starting to rain and the kids were playing in the increasing downpour.

As my dreams linger in my mind, I am the tiniest bit sad that my plans didn't work out to support my dream to continue seeking a longer more adventurous challenge - that weekend.  But another day will come when things fall into place for my next step.  There is no time to be sad or regretful.  I will be ready when that race day comes but for right now there are kids who think running in the rain with mom is a pretty okay adventure.

The perspective of children.  Priceless!

I'm off to splash in puddles.

3 Times a Marathon

After the CMFYC 10 miler I was talking to an ultra running friend, R.  Who is probably the biggest pusher focusing factor in my running life in that he has helped mentor and guide me in reaching and achieving my 50 mile goal.  After our conversation I now know he had some goals of his own for me to the tune of getting me to 100 miles.  I'm not saying I didn't wonder if I could do a 100 too, I'm just saying R's timeline and mine were radically different.  So of course after listening to his crack-like exciting Ultra runner banter talking with him I am seriously eyeing this:

There are two options for me.
The I know I can option of 50k.
And the next step to 100 option of 77 miles.

Yeah, that's about 3 times a marathon

When 2011 started I had a few goals.

I wanted to hit my 365 days of running. ~  Day # 361 today.
I wanted to make the leap to a trail 50 miler. ~ Done April 9th
I wanted to improve my overall fitness by cross training regularly. ~ Still working on that one.

I knew the racing year would hold a bunch of 50ks and an assortment of other shorter races but I didn't realize I would hit my A goal so early in the year.  This leaves me wondering if I simply "coast" for the rest of the year in running and focus on the remaining goals or do I take the next step towards a goal that I didn't think I would realize until 2012 or 2013?

While I love all the easy supportive words of encouragement, I'd love to hear your thoughts on making another leap for myself this year considering my other goals, my time restraints and my family.

Because we are talking about three times a marathon.

Race Goals ~ Catch Me If You Can Trail 10 miler

Day # 352 ~ Monday's unexpected p.m. run ~ 6.5 sweaty miles
3.5 a.m miles also sweaty

I have another race this coming Saturday.

I will be defending my Master's title at the Catch Me If You Can trail 10 miler.  Last year this race was difficult to fit in with a soccer game scheduled later in the morning and again this year it will be a logistics nightmare.  Thankfully Army Son will be home to make sure the kiddos get to the game on time but I will have to run fast to make it there myself!

In setting my goals for this race I'd love to say that I am going to play it safe BUT I'd rather have attempted to reach my goals and fallen short than to used excuses to not have tried.  So I will set aside the fact that my legs are almost 2900 miles tired.  And I'll over look that my hamstrings are still remembering those wonderfully challenging trails during that 50 miler.  And I'll also pretend that I haven't gained about 10 pounds that I was looking for.
I will instead set it all out there and go for a repeat win!

My I FINISHED goal: To arrive on time. To start. To finish.
aka: Finish Feeling Fine having Fun

This race is close enough that I can drive there the morning of so this goals should be in the bag!
My I CAN goal: Finish in 1:34 ~ last year's time.

My I LOVE IT goal: To finish and retain my Master's Winner Title.
regardless of finishing time.

My I DREAM IT goal: Under 1:30.

So there they are.  Goals.  Things to reach for but not to be defined by.  I am the total of all my experiences not just the latest experience.  So "win" or "lose" I will have another opportunity to enjoy the trails and the challenge they bring.  I look forward to seeing what I am capable of doing on day # 356.
Will 356 days of running have made me stronger?
No matter the time on that clock, 356 days will have made me stronger.  Stronger in my physical attempts to challenge myself and stronger emotionally to handle when my attempts fall short.

On any given day you just don't know what you are capable of until you amaze yourself doing it.

Three Things Thursday ~ Naked Truth Edition

The WEATHER
It's hard to imagine that on Tuesday night LBM was running around outside in snow and last night he was running around outside in only his Crocs.  I'll spare you the second photo.

The RACE:

I haven't even picked out a race day outfit.  It's Thursday.
Maybe that would make it too real for me.
I am nervous, no.
I am excited, no.
I am scared sh**less, no.
I'm going puke, well maybe.
In this blogger world filled with so much confidence it's hard to be brutally honest but I need to be.  I'm a bit freaked out about the possibility of running 50 miles.  But I am even more freaked out about the possibility of not running 50 miles.  But mostly, I'm completely freaked out about what I am going to need want to do after I prove to myself that I CAN run 50 miles.

The GOALS:

My I FINISHED goal: To arrive on time. To start. To finish.
aka: Finish Feeling Fine having Fun

I say this at each new race but it's true.  My biggest worry is getting to the race start.  Because as you now know, I am geographically challenged.  I have a card. It's a club.  This time I will be meeting Hubbs at the hotel and he and kids ~ all three of them ~ will be hopefully able to be at the finish line.

My I CAN goal: Finish in 10:30 - 10:45.

This goal is a hard one.  I have never ran on these trails.  I have never gone this distance in one day.  I know the course is technically challenging but I have done the 2 5+ hours training runs (aka my 6ish hour 50ks) and that is a requirement so I'm told for being able to complete a 50 miler.  I feel as ready as I can be.  So based off of my most technical course I set a goal range.  The lower end of this goal is to account for more experience and better training.  The higher end is a bit of reality that so many things can happen over the distance.  I hopefully can make this goal.

My I LOVE IT goal: To finish near 10 hours.

Meeting this goal would be beyond amazing.  This time would ensure snotty-nosed finish line photos from all the tears I would be crying.

My I DREAM IT goal: Under 10 hours.
As I often say, on any given day you just don't know what you are capable of until you amaze yourself doing it. I will take all the positive experience I can from this race and it's runners and volunteers no matter how my body chooses to perform on Saturday.

The HAT Run Trail 50k ~ Goals

I am reminded; in light of all that is happening in the world today that I am sheltered from but not unaware of, that I am so fortunate to be given the opportunity to be out in nature with other like-minded people enjoying what God has given us and helped us to be capable of. Along my run on Saturday I will be praying for various people and situations as I often do. I ask that you might join me (perhaps during your own run) in praying for all those affected to the recent natural disasters around the world.

Day # 311 ~ p.m. run ~ 6 miles

Did you see the weather forecast?

I guess I should be happy that the temperature for my Saturday race is a more comfortable 50degrees however I already thought there would be enough water on the course with at least 4 major creek crossing!
The upside is that I usually like running in the rain.  I just don't know how I will like running hills in the rain for 6 to 7 hours.  My fingers are going to be crossed that it holds off until after I have crossed that finish line!

The conditions will be what they will be so I won't speed a lot of time worry about them.  I'll try attempt to prepare for them as I look at setting so goals for this latest adventure.

So here it is:

My I FINISHED goal: To arrive on time. To start. To finish.
aka: Finish Feeling Fine having Fun

This may be my biggest worry for this race since I will be traveling alone to a place I have never been.  Did I mention I am geographically challenged?  I am.  I have a card.  It's a club.

My I CAN goal: Finish in 7:06.
Which is my time from the most challenging Ultra I've yet run.

This one is a little harder this time.  I don't know the course at all.  I DO know that it is relentless hills and water crossings.  So I am going into this race with much the same attitude as the Skyline Challenge 50k.  That would be to enjoy the challenge of this course.
My I LOVE IT goal: To finish within 31 minutes of my PR.
With a current PR is 6:06 my I LOVE IT time would be 6:36.
My I DREAM IT goal: Under 6 hours.

As I often say, on any given day you just don't know what you are capable of until you amaze yourself doing it.  I will take all the positive experience I can from this race and it's runners and volunteers no matter how my body chooses to perform on Saturday.

Seneca Greenway Trail 50k Goals

There is no hiding from the fact that the Seneca Greenway Trail 50k is on Saturday.  In a mere two more wake ups I'll be running through the woods probably covered in mud at least until the next creek crossing.  How sad to say that I still don't have the details all worked out yet.  Hubbs is away for training that couldn't be rescheduled and my sister options have somewhat fallen through.
The upside is that I don't have time to worry about my performance in the race because I am too busy trying to get all the arrangements figured out.

And I haven't even talked goals yet.
So here it is:

My I FINISHED goal: To arrive on time. To start. To finish.

Having already run this course with a lot of snow and ice last year it may be a new challenge to run it with all the mud and water they are reporting this year.  However I know that I can finish as long as I don't slide off the side of the mountain, which can happen you know!

My I CAN goal: Finish within 31  minutes of my last 50k trail ultra.

I say 31 minutes because that is the "at least as long" distance of this course in minutes. Well, that's the distance if I don't get lost.  I figure I can finish within a minute either side of my previous time. Again barring not sliding off the side of the mountain.

My I LOVE IT goal: A new distance PR.
A new course PR.
Since trail ultras are not exact distances. RDs like to say their course is at least 50k, a new PR would be more about average pace than finishing time.   My previous time for this course was 6:46 I'd love to crush that on Saturday.

My I DREAM IT goal: Under 6 hours.

Yeah. You read that right.
When I dream about this course I even go as far as wondering if I could improve my course PR by an hour.  When I dream I jump in with both feet even on Day # 298.
I always believe that on any given day you just don't know what you are capable of until you have done it.

I dream that I can cover that distance in under 6 hours.

If I don't slide off the side of the mountain.

It can happen.

Life giggles

For those who follow me on Daily Mile it will come as no surprise that I will more than likely be going into a streak of Ultras without any consecutive runs over 15 miles.  That is not really ideal when you consider I will be running 31+ trails miles twice within two weeks potentially followed by a trail 50 miler in early April.
To say that I am nervous about that point would be true.  But I have put in some serious weekly mileage.  I have done a bit more cross training
still not nearly enough.

Life is sometimes like that.  You make plans and set goals.
Life however giggles at your attempt to control things as it throws you curve balls.
The best thing to do when you are served a curve ball is to adjust your swing so that is what I will do.
As I approach the final two weeks before the Seneca Greenway Trail 50k I will adjust my mindset.
Add a few levels to my mental goals.
Since this will be my second time at this event the obvious A Goal is to better my time.
With the experience I have gotten over the past year in racing this distance on trails I should be able to accomplish that factoring weather conditions somewhat.
But another factor for how I run Seneca will be the HAT Run two weeks after.
The HAT Run is a new course for me.  It is also a much harder course.  This makes goals difficult to set.
And before goals are finalized there is one last factor for my early spring racing.

and my position on the ever shortening wait list.
This would be a new distance, new course, new adventure for me.
This would be a PR no matter what.
Well, assuming I finish and that would be the goal.  To finish.

So I ask you experienced and new runner friends alike,
What strategy would you use for goal setting?

The Same 365 Days

Here we are again at the close of one year and the beginning of the next.  It's a familiar place.  A place where we can either relish the successes of our past year or eagerly proclaim that the new year will be our fresh start closing out a year of challeneges.

This is where my year began.
You can click the link HERE and make your own accessment of whether or not I achieved what I wanted to in 2010.

I won't bore you with a recap of my year.  We each had the same 365 days to change and grow into the people we look at in the mirror today.  So if you have been following you already know the moments that I have shared with you, the ebb and flow of my little journey.  And now to look back might change the way I feel about the path I have already traveled.
Beacuse sometimes looking forward our choice seems like the right one but with the benefit of time the way we view our decisions changes and sometimes seems like a mistake.  But maybe it's more about the journey regardless of which turns we took to get there.

Again this year I find inspiration in odd places through my days.  Currently my running life has been held hostage but circumstance thus putting me on the treadmill watching movies while I run.
I just finished the movie Inception.
I find a quote from the movie meaningful right now.

"You're waiting for a train. A train that will take you far away. You can't be sure where it will take you. But it doesn't matter - because we'll be together."

The train for me is life right now.
I don't know where it is taking me but I am excited about the journey.
I hope that my trip will take me through amazing places and experinces.
I hope that my journey and all the challenges that I will face in traveling it will help not only be but will influence those around me.

The train could be life or a situation you are facing but whatever it is for you I hope you boldly board that train with your ticket in hand even if you are not quite such where it will take you because on this journey we will be together.

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Where did the time go?

Last night was basketball for S'ghetti girl so LBM and I ran around the playground, chased after balls and shared a few books.  We were having so much fun!
But before we knew it S'ghetti girl was racing out the door and basketball was over.

Where did that time go?

While playing with LBM on the playground chasing after him and making sure he didn't fall off the top of everything he just had to climb on I wondered the same question.

Where did that time go?

How did Army Son go from Squirt to Army Son to soon to be Married Army Son?  With problems and choices and decisions beyond the ones I can catch him if he falls from?

Where did that time go?

Since I had already ran in the morning I didn't do any real miles last night.
I mean the race is a mere 2 sleeps away.

Where'd that time go?

And I haven't talk goals yet.  So here it is:

My I FINISHED goal:  To arrive on time.  To start.  To finish.
The race has a 9 hour cut off.  Which tells me the course may not be a challengening as The Skyline Challenge course was.  If you remember, that was my all time favorite race EVER!  I know that I can finish in 9 hours as long as I don't fall off the side of the mountain, which can happen you know!

My I CAN goal:  Finish within 33 minutes of my last 50k trail ultra.
I say 33 minutes becuase that is the distance of this course in minutes.  I figure I can finish easily within a minute either side of my previous time.  Again barring not falling off the side of the mountain.

My I LOVE IT goal:  A new distance PR.
Since trail ultras are not exact distances.  RDs like to say their course is at least 50k, a new PR would be more about average pace than finishing time but with a 50k PR (time) of 6:46 I'd love to crush that on Sunday.

My I DREAM IT goal:  Under 6 hours.
Yeah.  You read that right.  When I dream I don't have little baby dreams.
When I dream I jump in with both feet even on Day # 175
I dream that I can cover that distance in under 6 hours.
If I don't fall off the side of the mountain.
It can happen.

The only thing more I could pray for is to have that thought that has been with me so much lately stay with me as I run across that finish line and throw my log onto the bonfire!
I pray I see those flames and think;

Where did that time go?

How did that happen?

Day # 159 ~ 3.5 morning miles

I'm asking that question a lot lately.
How'd that happen?

Things seem to be happening and I seem to be unaware of them.

LBM has learned to open doors.  ~ How'd that happen?
Army son shared life changing news that blindsided us ~ How'd that happen?
S'ghetti girl has taken to doing homework on her own without being asked.  ~ How'd that happen?
I surpassed my yearly mileage goal ~ How'd that happen?

I am now at 2026.7 miles.  That means on Tuesday's run I hit 2010 miles.
It came and went and I didn't even realize.

At the begining of the year it seemed like a lot of miles.
It seemed like something I wasn't sure I'd accomplish but I wanted to reach for it knowing that I need to reach into what is just beyond what I know I can do to be able to see how much more I can do.

Life is a bit chaotic in Shelly-land.
Army Son has thrown us a big curve ball, one that I am not ready to share in detail yet.
But I know that even though my eyes can't quite see how this will all work out,
I know that it will.

I've been promised and shown that it is true.

I have ONE regret

After having already run 40.8 miles this week, S'ghetti girl, LBM and I headed south right after work on Friday.  The kids were excited for all the activites Hubbs had planned to entertain them while I was running, staying at a nice hotel with a pool didn't hurt either.
The drive went smoothly except for the hammering downpours as we drove through thunderstorms.  I was glad to see the rain hopeful that it would lower the temperatures for the race tomorrow morning.

We arrive at our hotel around 7:30 p.m.  The hotel is bustling.  There was an Extreme Adventure Moto event taking place at the same area (The Cove Campground) that the race was to be held.  At first this was interesting.  I got to talk with one of the organizers of the event and several of the drivers as we patiently waiting to get our luggage and the two million "I can't go a night without it" child items up to our room without the benefit of a cart as they were all being used by the Extreme Adventure folks ~ mostly as a place to rest while they chatted and drank beer.

However being super girl for the weekend I easily managed the two kids and all the luggage and toys/blankets/snacks/race gear without interrupting their beer consumption.  Once settled in we had only to wait for Hubbs would had been delayed with a work issue and would not arrive until 9.  I had already been eating carb heavier meals but once Hubbs arrived we all went out for a rather late meal and to burn off some of the kids energy.

The plan had been for Hubbs to try to get LBM to sleep with him so that I could sleep what few hours we would have between lights out and the alarm.  Things rarely go as planned.  LBM would have nothing to do with Dad and of course wanted to make up for the lost hours of my run by sleeping latched on to me.  Literally!

That was fine.  Sleep.  What was that?
I look at the clock and it was 2:23 a.m.  and I am hearing a air wrench.  I.am.not.kidding.
The wonderful Exterme Adventure folks were outside our side of the building changing tires on the rigged out jeeps.  Yep.  Then Hubbs wakes up and asks if I am hot.  Well, yes it was hot in the room.  Our ac was broken.  I didn't sleep after that point.  I just snuggled with LBM and waited to see 4:00.

I was suprised by how dark it was at 4 a.m.  That is when I realized that I didn't have my contacts and would be running with my glasses on.  Not a great idea when the risk of falling is so high.
I also noticed that it was still rain.hard.  At least it would be cool.
It was so dark out!  My crappy Palm would not flash!
Hubbs and I at the start

I get up and go through the routine of getting ready to run.  I don't have to worry about nursing LBM since he spent the night with me.  That saved me some time still we are out the door a little later than we wanted.  So I was rushing at the start and had to jog to the potties no, outhouse when they were giving last instructions.

If you can see, I am smiling...that's before the fun started.

We tried a few pictures but they all were dark.  More to come from Hubbs when I get them.
I got my bib #12, ran to the outhouse, dropped a bag for the end of the race, hugged and kiss my family and then waited in the rain.

Thinking, "What that *#@! am I doing out here?"

With only 126 other crazies running it was an informal start with a "go."  After only 5 minutes the lead fasties informed us that they had lead us up the wrong hill.  Thanks.  It would take two more side tracks before I would learn the lesson here.
The first 8 miles were up hill.  Not just up a hill but up a 10 - 12% grade hill covered with mud, loose rock and leaves surrounded by a forest filled with posion ivy.  It was great!
During this section we were to follow ribbons tied on trees since we were not on an offical trail,  I fell into "running" with a group of about 20 other people with one young man speeding past us and saying something about getting to the start late.  After about 10 minutes I notice that our little group is bunching up.  There is a problem up ahead (of course this couldn't have happened at the bottom of the current hill we were going up!).  The fasty fast runner had doubled back because he had not seen a ribbon for a while.  We had gone the wrong way for about 3/4 of a mile!  We doubled back to find where we had lost the course.  We all joke about the extra distance and how we didn't need that.  I continue to run with this group through the first aid station which was a blur in my mind.  I had taken my new CamelBak which was mostly a blessing.

Those first 8+ miles took me just under 2 hours including one aid station.  When I got to the second aid station which was set on an half mile out and back under electrical lines the steepest of which I couldn't see due to the dense fog in the morning, I thought that it had just taken me nearly twice as long to go that distance as it does when I am on the road.  My legs were already covered in mud and scratches and I had nearly a marathon to go.

Between aid station #2 (which would also be #6 on the return trip) and number #3 there were stretches of wonderful single track trail (seriously we're talking deer trails here) separated by switch backs and trails covered with, you guess it rocks.  Unrunnable rocks, break your ankle and fall down the side of the mountain rocks.  So my pace was terrible but I tried to avoid all out walking everywhere I could.

At aid station # 3 (which would also be # 5) I actually copped a squat.  This was the second time I showed all of nature my behind.  The joys of ultra trail running.  I took a banana half at this aid station and a couple pretzels plus a cup of soda (at aid stations I tried to avoid the junk carbs and stick with the better fueling options.  Although while running ultras I treat myself to a soda with calories).  I was taking Gu along the way that I was carrying plus one from an earlier aid station.  I felt much better fueled for this race!  I was carrying Heed in my pack and I drank often.

Next was an out and back to aid station # 4 on a wide trail.  This was the first opportunity to see the fasties headed back on the return trip.  I took noticed of the first few guys but mostly was interested in what the girls were doing who were in the lead.  I did see one guy wearing Vibrams.  He looked super strong.  The lead ladies looked better than I thought I did.  I encouraged everyone who passed by me and mostly they did the same.  I did notice one girl running with a man.  I don't know why I remembered her so well, maybe the pink trimmed Nike Dryfit shorts?  She was one of the first 5 females at that point and going strong.  I would see her again and think she was a little like that show about Beauty.  The one where you are really judged on your beauty INSIDE.  I'll explain.

But back to the trail section:  This would be where I flew!  I chicked off so many runners in this section and made up some serious time.  I began to think I could actually get close to PRing.  But I didn't want my excitement to make me go too fast when I never I was having more trouble with the down hills than the up hills.    So I told myself I wouldn't walk until I got back through the aid station and returned to the woods after aid station # 5.  And that's what I did.mostly.

Because this is where I started talking to another female runner who I made been trying to catch.  We were too busy talking to look for ribbons we followed another runner who was headed up yet another hill.  Wrong way.  That is where I learned that I have to watch the trail for myself.all.the.time!  Thankfully someone at the bottom of the hill yelled to us that we had gone the wrong way.  We went to the top of the hill trying to catch the other runner but he was long gone.  (I hope he got back on track!)

Once around the aid station -  which of course was up a long winding hill - I really tried to pick the pace up.  These down hills were mostly runnable.  I quickly found myself running alone again.  I kept telling myself that I could (would have to) slow down once I hit the switch backs in the woods but I would not walk any of this 11+ mile section.  I did stop to pick up 3 salamanders and put them on the side of the road.  I passed some runners who had been running with me earlier.  They sounded German.  She called me pig-tail girl and yelled some encouragement.  As I was getting close to the aid station I saw miss pink-trimmed Nike Dryfit shorts.  I wondered how she would have made such little progress since I last passed her.  (she had been headed back and I was headed in to the turn around when I first saw her).  Since I was really running at that point we exchanged only well wishes and I raced on but as I was leaving the aid station (another banana half, water, pretzels and a few gummie bears) I over heard her talking as she appoarched the volunteers.  She was complaining about going off course and costing herself time and distance.  She was probably not at her best due to fatigue however, it was her behavior that helped remind me that I DID NOT want to behave that way no matter how tired I got.  So I continued to be smiling and up beat whenever I caught up with other runners.  Quite a few commented about how/why I was so happy/positive that late in the race.  It made me stop worrying about beating the 7 hour mark.  I felt so good about HOW I was racing that day.

I made my way back to the switch backs, I passed several groups of guys who were walking.  They did not appreciate my words of encouragement.  Grouchy!  I simply continued on my way.  As I neared the middle of the switch back section I came across Mr. Vibrams.  He was sitting along the trail rubbing his leg.  (This was the third time I stopped to offer help to another runner)  I chatted with him and asked 3 times if I should send help.  I know that sometimes pride makes us not want to accept help when we should.  He assured me that with 8ish miles to go he was going to finish.  (And he did.  I saw him come in as we were leaving the campgrounds.  We put the car windows done and cheered.)  The 4 man grouchy group passed me as I talked with Mr. Vibrams I would not see them again until the final aid station and their plan to walk had paid off for them because the were making great time in the last sections.

The final aid station was a repeater too.  However, this is where I realized I had one regret.  No one would ever believe that a race director would ever have people running up and down the section between the trail and the aid station.  I wish I had carried my camera but the worry over a few more ounces kept me from doing it.  I couldn't see it due to the fog and rain that morning but it was completely clear by noon.  It was steep and rocky and breathtaking.
I got confirmation of 4 miles to go once I reached that aid station.  I was literally jumping up and down and ready to hug every volunteer there.  I could not get the smile off my face.  Other runners who were headed out to the aid station as I was headed back kept telling me it was there.
That smile.  I was having the time of my life!

Those last four miles I was completely alone.  I worried that I would go off trail.  Everything looked so different once the rain had stopped and the hills were no longer rocky mud filled rivers.  But I didn't.  I did think of all of you in those last miles (as I had thought of some of you all throughout my race).  I thought how Steph was still running with more miles to go and wishing that I had more because I was having so much fun.  I thought how encouraged I have felt from all of you who take the time to comment or email.  I thought about how I would love to share the excitement and joy I feel for trail running with Hubbs or the kids someday.  Mostly I just thanked God for seeing me through this without serious injury and wishing I could give that kind of joy to everyone I know.

The miles flew by and I could hear people and cheers.  I knew I was getting close.  I finally climbed down out of the mountain and was on the ground running with every thing I had yet.  Hoping my family would be there to run in with me.  I glanced at the watch.  I couldn't believe how close I had come to be under 7 hours!  I had told my Hubbs I honestly thought I need 8 to finish.
Some days you just amaze yourself.  This day was one of those days for me.
I sprinted to the finish.  There was my family, cheering me in.
