Five 4 Friday

Being a numbers girl I was excited after my run last night when I realized that I had run 2936.1 miles in 2011.  That means that if I can average 7.1 miles a day for the rest of the year I could hit 3000.  That could be a lifetime record!  The stumbling block could be the holidays but at least it gives me one final goal to push for.

Do you have a final year end goals?  Did you meet all your 2011 goals?  What was the one you are most proud of?

Well it seems as though my readers don't like the idea that the word failure can be a positive thing if the response to yesterday's post is any indication.  If you missed it click HERE

What do you think being a "failure" means?

Today is my wedding anniversary.  I'm not a big romantic.  With kids under foot it is easy to slip into mom and dad roles and neglect the husband/wife roles a bit especially when the super secret spy and I are apart most weeks.  BUT tonight we will be spending an evening without children.  I know there will be eating and adult conversation.  I think there may be more but it's been a while since I was on a date so I might need to glance over the handbook to prepare myself.

Do you and your sweetheart make time for just each other?  Even after years of marriage?

I think December forgot it was December because we have been enjoying so fantastic weather!  Look at the morning I enjoyed recently.  Getting to run without looking like the Michelin man this time of year is great but I am kinda wishing for a white Christmas.  Sorry I am a four seasons kind of person.

Do you wish for a white Christmas?

Speaking of Christmas and the holidays no matter what you celebrate or if this time of year is simply the ending of one year and the beginning of the next, I wish you and yours a safe and happy season.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Who turned off the heat

Today is Day # 495

Wasn't this photo only yesterday my uber-sweaty evening run with the LBM in jogger?

Well this morning I was wondering who turned off the heat because it was COLD in SW PA.
I'm talking I need to break out the tights and long sleeves COLD.  Don't get me wrong, I love wearing my tights.  I always have trouble shedding them in the spring time but the issue is that I forgot about tights and such last spring.  I packed those things away after a final wash and barely gave them a thought until I wanted to pull them out this morning.
That would be a no go.
Let me say I did not look like this with the on.

I forgot about the hole in the crotch of those tights so this morning I stuck with the new-to-me-treadmill to grab some just-in-case-Friday-gets-crazy-miles.
And if you happen to see me out super early running in VA over the weekend and I happen to have on a pair of tights, let's just assume now that I went out and bought new ones.

How far gone will you let your workout gear get before you stop wearing it?

3 Things Thursday - The holy sh** edition

First I apologize for the out-of-character potty mouth.
This is a family friendly blog after all but today is a BIG day.

Holy Sh**!
It's snowing again.  Well, that was after the sleet but it's winter precipitation.  I'm really over winter now.  I am completely ready to begin complaining about the humidity and sweating too much.  Turning off the pellet stove and not having to clean it again would be great.  And don't even get me started on the electric bill.

Holy Sh**!
S'ghetti girl that rock-star of the academic life.  That streaker of school days to the tune of 5 years without missing a day!  That amazing nearly always straight A student.
Forgot part of her homework for the THIRD time.
...in Math.  Her least favorite subject.
yeah, it's booooorrrrring.

Holy Sh**!
In 8 more days I WILL be running the Bull Run Run 50 miler.  After watching my name creep painfully slowly up the wait list, it rested at #1 all evening and through the night only to be greeted this morning by an email from the RD telling me that...

Holy Sh**!
I'm IN!
...to the tune of...
... 50 miles....
...to just beyond what my eyes can see today...
...and in 8 more days, I'll be wondering what is just beyond the new place I find my feet...
...at the end of 50 miles.

Realign

This weekend, Saturday to be precise, I almost thought that this streak was over.
I don't know who snatched my body but she was not a runner!
I had the entire day to get out and put in 20ish miles on the trails.  The whole day.
What did I do to keep from getting out the door?  Well, I...

1.  slept in
2.  didn't fuel my body
3.  I gathered tax documents
4.  I started to clean the bathroom...
...S'ghetti girl's room...
...the cat box....
...the kitchen...
...the dishes.
5.  watched parts of 6 movies
6.  I opened the front door 25 times to check the weather.
7.  started to take down the Christmas tree (yes you read that right!)
8.  took a long hot shower.

The excuses...
1.  I must have needed the sleep since LBM still gets up most nights.
2.  I don't like to eat before I run anyway
3.  I promised myself I would get the papers together this weekend
4.  It was dirty...it was dirty...it was dirty...it was dirty...they were dirty.
5.  The tv was on and I got sucked in.
6.  It was freezing rain.
7.  Okay is there any excuse for having a Christmas tree still up on February 5th?
8.  I thought it would help me get motivated.

I know the suspense is killing you but of course I did run.
2 miles
on the treadmill very late Saturday night.

All this reminds me that sometimes I just need to realign my thinking.  I was not happy that I allowed the freezing rain to keep me from doing what I have scheduled.  I know that as a working mom I have to take advantage of the opportunity to run when I have.  I also know that I will not pick the weather on race day.  So I have to be willing to run in less than perfect conditions however I am willing to admit that on any given day you just don't know what kind of runner you'll be.
So I took an unexpected step way back week.
So I disappointed myself with an unproductive day.
Sunday I got right back on track with 10 miles and this morning I got up early and got in 4 steady miles.
I realigned my attitude and put myself back on track.

No fair weather fans here!
This morning I am back on track and Steeler Proud.

Brisk

It was 3 degrees this morning.
It was brisk and invigorating.
I find an odd kind of beauty in a morning like this one.

It seem the colder the temperature gets the quieter it becomes.
I am missing that quietness in all my treadmill running lately.
Although I am enjoying the benefits of running in one place; being home with the kids, watching movies and not having to pee in cornfields, I am also eager to get back to those quiet reflective runs.

In the meantime, we enjoyed a weekend of running in one place and exhausting afternoons of playing in the snow.  We built snowmen, had snowball fights,

 played on the swings and

sledded down hills.
Now this is a kind of cross training I can really get into no matter the weather!

Brrr, it's cold in here...

...that should be OUT here.
It was freezing cold out this morning.
No it was beyond freezing.  In fact even the ice along the road thought it was cold.
So what did I do?
You know after taking yesterday off work because I and nearly the entire family is enjoying head colds.
Well I went for a run outside of course.
And I couldn't wear any of my old winter gear I had to wear my new stuff from Christmas that isn't quite warm enough to cut this morning's idea of cold.
But this morning, I matched!

Day # 239 ~ a.m. run 3.5 freezing miles

What am I the only one who knows you can sweat out a cold?
And shivering while you are sweating has to speed up the process, right?

Days in my life

In typical holiday fashion life has been busy.  I have been putting in my miles both inside and outside keeping my base mileage around 50 - 60 miles per week through the holidays knowing that March and my first known races of 2011, will be here before I am ready for it.

We are blessed to have Army Son home with us through the holidays.
The family hasn't been together for about a year so we have a lot of catching up to do in what little time we have.  Army Son has a large group of friends to spend time with also and he's need to find some solitude before he goes back to share nearly every minute of life with his battle buddies.

We all made sugar cookies at my sister's house.  The kids have fun decorating each cookie and everyone enjoys testing the end results.

It is a really nice way for all the cousins to get together, share a tradition and make memories.
LBM currently believes he IS Buzz Lightyear.  He worn his Buzz outfit all weekend long.  Last night I finally got him to let me wash it!  I told him the lasers wouldn't work if it got any dirtier.

Day # 225 ~ p.m. run 10.5 miles

And that brings me back to running.  Last night on the treadmill since my helper Army Son was out visiting with friends.  I am getting used to the routine but miss taking LBM out in the stroller.

Who knew that I would actually miss pushing that heavy ackward thing?!
Soon enough, right?

Just a Country Girl Running

The snow is coming.
The upper end of the ridge line was whited out as the snow crept it's way down the cove as I ran this morning.
Yeah, outside!
I made it back just as the flakes began to fall around me.
I wish I had more time since I love running in the snow.

Day # 215 ~ 3.5 / 26:32

I didn't get up super early since LBM was up coughing through the night and we had very little sleep.  Even though I really wanted to just crawl back into bed after I got S'ghetti girl on the bus I knew I had to get outside for a few miles.
With weather shield and heating pad in place we headed up the road.
My pace felt easy the first mile which often happens after being stuck inside for so long but when I looked at my time I knew I was going to have a great run.
I just went with whatever my legs could give me and it felt comfortable.
After reading some other posts this morning, I know that I fall into running most of my runs without a pre-determined pace.  I wish I cared more about that but I don't.
I typically run because I love doing it.
Do I regret this training method in some race?
You bettcha!
I know that structured training produced predictable results.

But right now and into the beginning of the New Year, life is just real good remembering that I am simply a country girl who loves to run trying to raise country kids who I'll always be able to catch!

The things you hear when you shut up and listen

We enjoyed the extra long Thanksgiving weekend.
Thanksgiving Day ~ Day # 200 ~ 10 miles

Our family spent the day playing Wii and being together before
we drove to Gramma's house for a big Thanksgiving day evening meal.
After a bit of overindulgence, we played more games and then went out to see the
crazies who lined up by the hundreds at the local stores.

All this for more "stuff."  No Thanks!

Hubbs and I toyed with the idea of selling coffee and hot chocolate but the rain and cold
encouraged us to come to our senses and get the kiddos and head home.

Day # 201 ~ 5 miles

We did find our way to a store.  Sams Club for groceries and then we roamed around
while Hubbs was distracted by the flashing electronics.

Day # 202 ~ 10 miles

S'ghetti girl and I worked on headbands for our school districts Holiday Workshop.  S'ghetti girl was most excited about her fashion sparkle headbands.  I think she would cover herself in glitter if she could.

Day 203 ~ 1 extra mile with S'ghetti girl and her new mile PR

On the running front, my streak continues.  Day 200 happend to fall on Thanksgiving day.
I thought that was an nice coincidence since I count the ability to run among my blessings.
S'ghetti girl has been working on being more active and broadening her diet.
She went out with me on Sunday to work on her mile.  I was so proud of her effort.
As we ran she told me, "...it's not about how fast I go.  All that matters is that I finish."

Day # 203 ~ 6.5 miles solo

I may not have taught her to love running (yet) and I am fine with whatever she chooses
to love doing to be active but what makes me so happy for her is her attitude.
And over a lifetime, that is what will help her the most; having the right attitude.

A weed?

When you change the things you look at, the things you look at change.

When I am running down the road I have the time to notice the little things that I often over look as I go about all the other aspects of my day.

I see the beautiful area I live in from a perspective a little closer to the ground.  I enjoy seeing the subtle changes and appreciating some of the beauty in unexpected things.

Today there was beauty in so many things along my way.  The new baby goats, the Canadian geese, the rich smell of the creek, the apple tree fully in bloom, the cows in the pasture, the driver who slowed and waved, the smell of the lilac bushes.  It is amazing how much beauty can be found in less than thirty minutes.

What beautiful things did you see along your run today?

When I Dream I still see Trees

I know it has been 3 days and I am already looking for my next trail race but I feel like I can still smell the evergreens.  It has been a long time since a racing experince has left such an impression on me.  Even though I can't really say I was "racing" during this lastest event as much as I was enjoying the journey.
And ENJOY I really did!  The still painful big toes are a small price to pay for such a wonderful day.

Since the race I have been cross training; the eliptical, walking, a little jogging and core work but that is it.  And I am going crazy.  I do hope to get in a short easy run tomorrow to test out my poor boo-boo toes.  I hope I don't lose more toenails!  My trail shoes did not have enough miles on them and I think they should have been a half size smaller.
My big toes were the only 'hot' spot after the race.
Major fluid under my toenails.  Painful!
I will spare you the details.

Have you ever experienced a blister under your nail bed?
What did you do to relieve the pressure?

Through snow and mud and water high...

We were up and ready early in the morning.
I was still suffering from a major cases of nerves but I was eager to get the race started knowing that once I was running things would settle down.
We didn't have any trouble finding our way to the race start.  I got registered (you did that race morning) and could have made the 7a.m. earlybird start up couldn't find hubbs, who was managing the kiddos to let him know I could head out early.  So I waited with the family, visited the potty a few times and generally just dealt with second guessing my clothes, shoes, fuel, screws in the shoes....

Finally it was time to get out there and line up with loads of other crazies!
It looks like I was feeling very confident.
As the race started I realized I didn't know the proper way to pass someone on a single track.  I struggled with finding a way to pass with so many runners trying to fit into the tiny trail.  I will remember this for my next trail race; start at the front of the pack!
I wanted to try and take pictures throughout the race however the footing was so bad the first, hummm how many miles?  With no mile markers it was difficult to judge distance at all and to be honest the footing was bad almost the entire race (whether it was due to ice/snow or mud/water).  At least the first 7+ miles were serious snow/ice with challenging footing.  Once I was in a safer section I snapped this shot to show a little of the snow.  This was at least a runnable amount of snow but it was frozen solid making footing very unevening and often ankle turning.  I saw many runners who must have not wore screws or cleats of some kind stumble and fall.

After about 45+ minutes of running we came to our first 'real' stream crossing.  I could hear the runners yelling as they hit the cold water so I knew we were getting close long before we got there.

I was not sure I wanted to go into the water!  BUT after I did it I was amazed at how good it felt on my feet.  The water didn't make me cold at all and my feet and toes didn't seem to mind being wet.
This was one of two serious water crossings and the first of many times my feet would be soaking wet.

The trails continued to be a mix of snow, ice, mud, water and some runnable sections for the next 6+ miles.  This is a view back at the aid stattion at mile 11~.  There were so many amazing volunteers helping at aid stations, flagging road crossings and keeping us all encouraged along the way.
After this point there were aid stations about every 4-/+ miles along the way well stocked with all kinds of goodies!  I even drank a little bit of regular soda at one station!

When I left this aid station I finally started running on my own.  Prior to this point I had been afraid of being alone on the trail as the pack had thinned out.  Worrying that I might get lost by missing one of the blue blazes that marked the way.

The next aid station was about mile15+ at that point each runner had to decide if they were going for the 50k or running the marathon.  The choice came easily I was feeling so great at this point!  The extra distance was ran around a beautiful lake.  I knew from the course discription that there were bathrooms at the park/playground somewhere near the lake and I knew I would have to use them!  Ahh, mother nature.
The bathroom detour cost me about 10 minutes and the distraction of getting toasty warm in the bathhouse and then having to go back out in the cold.
But it put a smile on my face!

The trails had many large trees down blocking the path.  Some had been cut allowing us to run through them others we had to climb over or bushwack to get around.

The hills on the course were challenging over such a distance but the scenery helped to keep my mind off the burning in my legs.  This race was so amazing.  The trails were breathtaking!

As challengening as the course was in places there were also places like this one that were open and sunning and finally for a brief moment running was easy!

Every so often along the race there were signs like this one about Goldfish to encourage us along the way.
Gotta love volunteers!

With about 4 miles to go, I had fallen in with another runner. We traded leading several times. We chatted when the trial would allow us to be close enough to hear one another since we rarely could be side by side. As the other runner took the lead and we chatted we missed a turn. We stayed on the trail BUT the course didn't. There was one other runner ahead of us who we quickly caught up to since she was having to bushwack her way through the trail. We talked about how there were no "ribbons" tied to trees and the trail hadn't been opened only to find out that we had gone the wrong way, slopped through extra water and mud, fought loads of thorns and created extra distance but we now back on the course!

And finally there was my family cheering for me as  I can to the finish strech after what turned out to be 33+ miles!  I felt amazing!  Still with a smile on my face.

At the finish!  My first Ultra completed!
There was a great BBQ picnic after the race for runners and family.

I am so proud of my accomplishment.  I just can't explain the feeling of joy having just spent those hours playing my the woods, getting covered with mud and splashing through the creek a few times.
Thank you feet for carrying me through.

The day was not over after the race.  Our family was headed farther south to see a few houses on Sunday so that meant about 2 hours in a car before I got to finally get a shower.  Gross!  But I didn't want the day or the high to end!

Thanks for all the encouragement and support leading up to my lastest adventure.
I honestly thought about many of you along my journey and I can't wait to take you along for the next one.
