A Runner's New Year

The new year may be celebrated on December 31st at midnight with the raising of glasses and exchanging of kisses for most people but for runners the new year begins months earlier with spring race registration often starting before the first snow has covered the ground to herald in winter.  We sit under our laptops or have fingers poised above our tablets waiting for the moment to click register hoping the website doesn't crash before your entry is complete.  Maybe a few of those spring races are a little more old school and you mail in your entry form only to wait through the process to find out if your a runner or on the wait list.  It can all add to the challenge of a hectic holiday season!

Since I don't have much control over the registration process for the races I want to run, I focus on doing things that will help me minimize the negative effects of those sometimes frustrating processes.

Information
I make sure I know which races I want to include in my spring schedule and then I understand how their registration process works.  Do I get priority if I have run it before?  Will there be a lottery?  If I get in and can't run can I defer?  Do club members get early registration?  How long will I wait before I know if I am in or not?  Just like I research the race course, aid stations and conditions, I want to understand what it takes to get to run the event.

Focus on the positive
Once I know about the registration process I focus on everything I have that will help my chances of getting to run and I let go of everything else.  I don't complain on line or with running friends about the hoops that I have to run through to get registered.  I can't change it.  I can focus on meeting the requirements.

Get A Plan
I may not get into every race I register for but I will get into some of them so why not get a plan.  Whenever I have a little extra time I get out the calendar and pencil in the races I have/will register for and see how they all fit to help get me to my A race for the spring schedule.  I pencil in what plan B is for races that I might not get to run.  Will I do a long run with friends or plan to find another event to fill any gaps?

Consistency
For me, the best piece of advice on surviving that Runner's New Year is consistency.  While many runners may enjoy a bit of a holiday taper, I try to keep my workouts consistent and maybe even add to them to help stay focused over the holiday season.  It takes creativity but runners are already great at "fitting it in."  Splitting a run, joining a challenge, starting an added cross training element , focusing on clean eating are all things I do over the holiday season to keep my fitness level and my enthusiasm up.

Your Runner's New Year or the holiday season doesn't have to derail your attitude or undermine your fitness.  As in all things it is simply the way we chose to look at it.  Chose to leave these season better than you started it.

Something Old, Something New...

Something Old

As I celebrated another in the growing pile of birthdays recently, the list that can be filed under 'Something Old" grows longer.  My running streak would be one of the items on that list.  Today marks day 1286.  There are days when I feel every one of those 11,330+ miles but the majority of days I can't imagine missing a day.  Another biggie on the 'Something Old' list is

StoneMill_LogoFinal-2013_CopperplateGothicLight77pt

This will be my third running of the Stone Mill 50 Miler.  I'll make no predications about what the clock will say when I cross the finish line this year.  While I'd love to finish in daylight I have to set my expectations in reality.  Experience has taught me that many things come into play over ultra distances and the added pressure of time goals, at my current fitness level, would do nothing to improve my performance.

Something New

Run to the Finish HBBC

Filed in the drawer, 'Something New' you will find that I almost missed out on my holiday motivation!  The Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge.  Since Stone Mill is usually my last real race of the year I tend to backslid a little but with the support and accountability of the HBBC I have been able to survive the past three holiday seasons without gaining weight or losing any fitness.  If you want to join in the fun click the image above to hop over the Amanda's Run to the Finish.  Make sure you let her know Shelly referred you to the challenge and we can help keep each other on the right trail or at least a little closer.

HBBC Weekly Update - Excess

LBM is awesome at Insanity

This past week might be summed up as a week of excess.  Not the usual kind of excess in drinking or eating but an excess in workouts and let's not forget the excessively nice weather!

The start of HBBC is usually the start of some serious cross training for me.  This time of year I don't have any races to look forward to until at least February so I use the "off" time to try to focus on getting my fitness a bit more well rounded.  This year I am also working on getting my hips to look at little less rounded.

How many times do you think I've stepped on that cat?

November 26th;  15.5 mile run, 1 FV, 1 FB partic = 17.5 pts
November 27th ;  10.36 mile run, 3 Insanity Plyo Cardio , 1 WOW, 1 FB partic = 15.36 pts
November 28th;  7 mile run, 3 Insanity Plyo Cardio , 1 Cardio abs, 1 FV, 1 FB partic = 13pts
November 29th;  10 pts run, 3 Insanity Pure Cardio, 1Cardio abs, 1 FV, 1 FB partic =  16 pts
November 30th;  14 pts run, 3 pts Insanity Power/Resistance, 1 pt Cardio Abs, FB 1 pt, FV 1 pt = 20pts
December 1st;  12 run pts, Insanity Power 3 pts,Cardio abs 1 pt, FB 1 pt, FV 1 pt = 18 pts
December 2nd;  9 mile run, Insanity Plyo 3 pts, FB 1 pt, FV 1 = 14 pts
113.86 pts for the week

I didn't look back to see what my running/workouts looked like last year at this time but I ended the week feeling like my schedule might have been a little excessive.  And considering I'm expecting I probably should not go over board.

What do you think?  Excessive or just holiday spirit?

Speaking of excessive, our neighbors put up their lights.  Actually they had been working on it for a few weeks.  This is just a small sample of what their property looks like.

Did I slip that in or will you be back tomorrow for the announcement?

How to Reach Your Max

INGREDIENTS

3 people suffering from colds
25 hours clean sweep cleaning a house
2 family Thanksgivings
1 church luncheon
57.9 miles run
Return to Insanity
Start of HHBC
13 Hours of driving
1 Dead mouse
1 crying little boy

Mix all ingredients over a six day period.

That was the recipe I used to end up in bed this morning until 9 o'clock feeling like a bus had run over me.  I had pushed myself to my max and finally my body told me that was it.  It was done.  It needed some rest.  So this morning when that little boy was crying again I snuggled in bed with him.  The super secret spy would handle taking S'ghetti girl to school.  I had already packed lunches so back to bed I went without a second thought.

I didn't dream about missing an early morning run.  I didn't dream about all that cleaning.  I didn't dream about that mouse.  I didn't dream about Shawn T.  Well, I might have a little.  And when I woke 2 1/2 hours later, I didn't have a single regret for having fallen asleep.  LBM needed the comfort of mommy with him and my body had hit it's Max.  It was time to pause.

I'll still run later today but maybe a shorter distance at a gentle pace.  I'll probably still do Insanity thanks to taking a little extra time this morning to allow my body to rest.  And if I don't I may lose all use of my arms by tomorrow.

While I wouldn't recommend this recipe to others and I hope to not use it again any time soon.  But it did allow me to quickly see how everything in life can add up.  The past 6 days helped remind me that it's okay to push myself even when life gets hectic and it's also just as okay to allow myself a little extra rest.

What does it take for you to reach your max?

HBBC Week 1

Monday:  9.55 Miles
With the start of HBBC I wanted to make sure I'm not just running to simply "get points" because that isn't the point.  I want to focus on being healthy during what can easily be a busy time of year filled with extra indulgences.

Tuesday:  9 Miles
I started my day with some yummy food trying to use up some left overs.
After last nights dinner I knew I had some steamed veggies.  That meant I had enough to add them to my eggs for breakfast and then my salad at lunch.
Sorry I was too hungry to remember to take a photo of the deliciousness.

Wednesday:  9.61 miles with local running friend, Chris.
A nice mix of trails and roads while I explored some new running routes.
Then rounded out my miles on the TM to keep things neat.  10 miles for the day.

Thursday:  8 dark Miles.  Thanksgiving was filled with housecleaning, cooking and family visiting.  Some extra housework pushed my run until after Thanksgiving dinner.  I enjoyed running back on my home turf even in the dark.

Friday:  8 Miles.  More house cleaning clean sweep style, extended family visiting, and family game time.

Saturday:  10 early miles followed by a day of house cleaning.  Isn't a holiday meant for resting?  I missed that part.  I was excited about my run in the early morning because I had gotten a Twilight movie to watch since I would be on the treadmill.  Not so excited when I realized that I had gotten the wrong one.

Sunday:  6 Miles.  Early quick miles, church, a church lunch with a visit from Santa and you guess it, more cleaning before we piled in the truck to return to Virginia.

HBBC
60.55 miles
7 Pts for FV

Hopefully this week I will be able to keep the FV going, add the WOW and maybe not do quite as much cleaning.

Chime In and Join Me

Day # 913 ~ Double Day a.m. 8 miles - p.m. 6.2 miles

Even though the temperatures have plummeted re-hydrating was still on my mind after my run last evening.  I mixed my glass of chocolate milk and realized that I still hadn't figured out what I was going to use for hydration during Stone Mill.  With the Stone Mill 50 miler less than a week away it is a decision I need to make soon.

I am looking at getting a pack with a bit more storage but one that is sized better for my body than the giant Camelbak that I used during Laurel Highlands.

These are two packs I am looking at.
Nathan Intensity Race Vest

OR

Basically they are the same.  The Intensity is supposed to be sized for a female body.  I am hoping someone will have first hand experience with one or the other to let me know...
1.  Was there enough storage.  What could you carry?

2.  Did you get the Nathan HPL and think it felt too big?

3.  What about the valve?  Did you have any trouble with it?

4.  Any issues with the pack shifting and causing chafing?

I've read a ton of reviews about packs but can't find them locally to try them out for fit.  Since I still have the scars on my back from chafing during FOTM, I am hopeful that I can finally find a pack that stays put and keeps me supplied.

Now that you offered your two cents, let me return the favor and remind you that
is about to start!
But there is still time to enter.

I Dare You!

Yes it is that time again.
Time for you to make that feeble attempt to beat me in the HBBC 2012
As you may know I have done fairly well every year.  Mostly because I am
a mileage whore seriously competitive.
But this year could be your chance because now that I am in  my new digs in VA, I may not be able to stick to my usual fall workout schedule.  So far I haven't been doing very well and with a less than reliable treadmill, a often gone hubby and a little guy that sometimes over rules my daily mileage, this could be the year that you put me in my HBBC place.

Make sure you tell Amanda that I sent you when you sign up.  And even though I'll be out to win it all, I will make sure to encourage you along the way too.  Because it's a lot more fun doing all the right things when you know you are not the only one doing them.

So whether you sign up to kick my butt or kick your own, click over and register.  Tell Amanda that Shelly at One foot in Front of the Other sent you and get ready to begin for some serious healthy habit come November 19th.

Look out HBBC I'm ready for you!

Cause for Celebration

Today is Day# 610

It was a high mileage week in my journey towards my 100 mile trail race.

Daily Mile 78 mile week
One more week higher mileage week
and then a step back week with cross training
I will actually be excited to cross 80 miles in a week again.

Resolution Run ~ 2012

As I look ahead to the new year that I woke up to this morning; the thought of a clean slate, fresh goals and a renewed drive helped move my over indulged body and out of schedule mind.
The weather was a wonderful mix of sunny skies and cloudy breaks with a breeze to keep me company.

Had I been in PA I would have had company on this run as Biking Sherpa is making fitness goals for 2012 she would have happily joined the fun
extra HBBC points are incentive too
and LBM would have enjoyed the jogger ride
but with the "race" to take place in VA traffic is often an issue.
But even solo the miles flew by and the hills didn't seem nearly as tough.  It's amazing what a little "race" incentive can do for your mind.
I finished ready to return to my family and content that I did something wonderful for me.

Here's to another year to running and fitness!
Thanks Amanda.

What I Love/What I'd Love to Love Wednesday

What I Love and
What I'd Love to Love Wednesday

Through daily life it is often the little things that make each day special.  With that in mind, today I wanted to share with you a few things that I have been using/enjoying lately.

A product thumbnail of Crocbandâ„¢ Lined
My Crocs

After so many miles on my feet nothing beats slipping on these shoes.  My toes are often tender after ultra length events and the roomy toe box allows me to give my tootsies all the room they need.  I also like the feeling of walking barefoot.  I wear these around the house after running and I haven't had any problems with my feet or calves cramping after hard runs.  Could there be a connection?  I don't know for sure but the soles of my feet haven't felt better!

The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode Gallery

When my oldest attempted to get my interested in this series I said No Thanks!  However, when I was stuck on the treadmill Again with nothing to watch he talked me into giving it another chance.  10 miles later I was hooked.  Granted I could do without the graphicness of the show, the story line is reminiscent of Lost with wonderfully well rounded characters and an engrossing story line.
Today is day # 570 of my running streak and with this series to watch, I think tonight's going to be a long one!

Using Leftovers

One quick and super easy way to get a few more servings of veggies in your diet is to use those left over veggies from dinner in your breakfast or lunch.  As a full time working married single parenting mom, my time is at a premium so packing for the day's work is often something that doesn't get done.  That usually means I won't be eating since I work straight through without a break.  But if I plan ahead it doesn't have to.
A trick I have found that is super fast is to use my leftover veggies in my breakfast meal.  Whether I add them to my eggs or eat them in a wrap.  If I made extra the night before I will add the reheated veggies to my salad at lunch time.  I love how the warm and cold veggies mix in interesting textures.  Its a quick extra serving or two of veggies that might have gone to waste.

Run:Your Heart Out Skirt

Running Skirts

Okay so I was the one that was so keen on my Running Skirts skirts at first.  They didn't stay up but I did keep trying them and found that I really like them for shorter runs.  I even wore one for the Fire on the Mountain 50k.  I had pinned it to my tights to keep it from slipping.
But this little one is on my

What I'd LOVE to Love List!

Run:Your Heart Out Skirt

Do you see that little cord?  I think it could be the answer to my skirt slipping problems!  The only issue is the price of this little beauty.
Another thing holding me back are some of the negative comments about it's fit.
So do you have this sweetheart of a running skirt?
What do you think of it?  Is it worth the investment?

Do you like zombie movies?  Or watching movies while you run?

Do you now think I'm a geek for loving my crocs?

How are you doing getting those HBBC points?

What have you been Loving lately?

What's on your Love to Love It List?

Conflicting Goals ~ HBBC Week One

This year's installment of the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge could not have started on a better day for me,
November 19th.
Remember that was the fabulous Stone Mill 50 Miler
which turned into 55 miler

Are you sick to death of these photos yet?
So I started the challenge off with a weeks worth of points!
Although my diet left a little to be desired that day.
(There is a suggestion for the aid stations, more fruits and veggies.  )
I did eat about 2 and a half bananas that day.

The down side of the HBBC for me is that I want to rack up points even though I know that I need to have at least two weeks of lower mileage so that I can start adding Intensity back into my workout routine along with my running.

Conflicting Goals.
That should be my middle name.
Seriously.
I got a email from a friend today.
He is offering to crew me in an early spring 100.
Yes.  I just typed
One Zero Zero.
For a split second I thought he was on crack and then I jumped to the website and started thinking how could I make this work.  Emailing other friends for their opinions.  Contemplating which 100 I could do.
Do I have brain damage?

While you all contemplate my sanity, let's look back at yesterday's 21 Facts.  Not surprisingly the first to get the answer right was Marlene.
She knows me so well!

My mom did dress my sister and I alike however I did not like dressing like my older sister.  Today I'd feel differently due to her sense of style.  I wish she's show up each morning and pick out clothes for me.  Because if left up to me, it's tees and capris every day! When I'm not in running clothes, that is.

Glad to see that so many of you guessed correctly.

HBBC Weekly Points
11/19 ~ 55 mile run = 55 pts
11/20 ~ 2 mile run + F/V = 3 pts
11/21 ~ 5 mile run + F/V = 6 pts
11/22 ~ 8 mile run + F/V = 9 pts
11/23 ~ 8 mile run + F/V = 9 pts
11/24 ~ 2 mile run + F/V = 3 pts
11/25 ~ 8 mile run + F/V = 9 pts
Week One 94 pts

I doubt I'll see those numbers again but it sure was fun!

How are you doing with the HBBC?  Getting in those F/V?

Do you allow yourself multiple goals at one time?
How do you deal with conflicts between them?

A Battered Brown Box

As I was attempting to work through some saddness this morning while I was squeezing in my 3.5 miles this morning.  "Squeezing in" because of the major snow storm we will be getting by noon today.  "Saddness" because my Army son has yet to get ANY of the letters that I have mailed to him.  My runs are frequently a time when I try to quiet myself enough to listen for some kind of understanding when the stress in my life seems to be more than my shoulders can bare.

As I was focusing on my foot strike (I am actually getting very good at being a fore-foot striker!) my thoughts shifted to how much Army son had supported and encouraged me over the years with my running.  I thought about all the days he would greet me while I was still getting out of the car from work.  He would help unload the car (kids, groceries, whatever) and then encourage me to hit the road.  My mind wandered down those happier memories and found it's way to the HBBC.  You all remember that, right?  Well I had all but forgotten.  Sorry Amanda.  That just shows you that I wasn't really in it to win it as much as I was in it to keep motivated over the holidays BUT I did win it and that meant I should have gotten a package from the lovely host Amanda!  She even emailed me that it was in the mail....long ago.  How could I have forgotten?

I finished my run (26:02) and was stretching on the porch I wondered if the carrier could have put the package in one of the two totes fill with Army gear that have been living on my porch since hubbs got back from AFG.
Sure enough there it was!!
A slightly battered brown box of happiness.

I believe that God puts things on our path EXACTLLY when we need them.  He had allowed me to forget about the HBBC and the excitement of winning until the day I needed a little bit a happiness the most.  (okay maybe not the most but I needed happiness today)  Maybe I would rather that He simply allow Army son to get my letters but I know that there is a greater reason that they have not yet been recieved.  Perhaps that reason has more to do with Army son than me.  What I know for sure is at some point I will understand the why and it will be more amazing than anything I could ever have figured out!

Back to the battered brown box of brightness.
Do you see all these goodies!  Thanks so much Amanda!  I am so excited to try it all out.  Everything from a new book to an electronic jump rope!  Loads of yummy stuff, new socks, a visor, two bags and more.  I am sure I will be posting about all the great things as I get to enjoy each one.  My daughter (the middle one) already has her eye on the sweet PINK digital key chain (like she needs a place for her keys?!?).

If I ever get that trail 20 done these will both come in handy!
One during the run and one after.

Thanks so much Amanda!

Thank Jill!

I Kicked Bootie

A great BIG THANK YOU to Amanda at Run to the Finish for hosting the Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge that kept us all mindful of our diets and activity levels over the holidays! Who says you have to gain weight over Christmas and New Years? Thanks to Amanda a lot of us did not! Oh and did I mention that I won! Can you believe that?

I have to give the credit to Army son for all the extra support he gave me with the little kiddos for me to get in some great runs that I would have otherwise missed out on.  I can't wait to tell him that I won!

It's done.  I'm in with 8 weeks to go.  March 6th.  A little bit scary but with that great Holiday Bootie Buster Challenge, I kept my mileage up over the holidays so I am only behind on my long runs a little.  I will hold off on the decision to run the B&A Trail Marathon  on March 7th, until I can email the race officials and see if dropping to the half is an option mid-race.  I have ran several marathons that offered that option so I know it could be a possiblity.
I am still needing my hubbs blessing before I can register for the second race anyway.  He does think a day apart is pushing it as far as my sanity goes.

There is always the Lower Potomac River Marathon on March 14th.  This race may be a bit close to Army son's graduation from basic training.  We don't have a firm date yet.

It's nice to have something to look forward to and focus on.  This is really helping keep me from getting depressed over my Army son's absence.  It's amazing what a little running can do for you.

Speaking of running I haven't put up my totals for a while.  I'll catch you up for the week.  This is the first week without my running supporter so I am thrilled that I was able to use all of your encouraging words to keep me motivated.  I can not say it enough, thank you thank you thank you for all the comments and emails that help encourage me to not  just sit on the couch and eat potato chips crying about how my little baby boy has left me.  It is so wonderful to have a group of people who completely understand why I would spend days thinking about which race to run, what shoes to wear, how cold is too cold to run outside, fretting over only getting 7 miles when the schedule called for 10; here I am understood and encouraged and inspired by all of you.  Thank you!

January 10 ~ 6.5 (53:30/8:05) last outside run before Army son left (I had a good cry during)
January 12 ~ 3.5 (27:34/7:53) first a.m. run  Yeah I did it!

January 13 ~ 3.5 (27:23/7:49) a.m. run
January 13 ~ 3.5 (29:52/8:29) p.m. run first run with jogging stroller.  What a difference that makes!  I really need upper body work but I am so proud that I got out and did it!  Battery powered lantern and heating pad for the littlest.  It was great!

January 14 ~ 3.5 (27:47/7:56) a.m. run  Starting the day off right again!
January 14 ~ 6.5 (54:08/8:20) p.m. run  Double Day.  I am so proud of me for getting some miles in!  Another night of lanterns, heating pads and jogging strollers.

My schedule has another 10 and my 20 miler for the weekend.  With kiddos it is a struggle to cover those really long runs and 20 of the treadmill is so yucky!  I am hoping that my mama will help with kiddos on Sunday.  I have my biking sherpia lined up since my 20 will be on trails in the Buchanan State Forest.  I am hoping to have some great pictures to share with you after the run.  So what is on your schedule for the weekend?
